The alkaline diet is a myth and can make your health worse

You might have heard of the alkaline diet? It seems to be one of the nutrition and health trends over the past 10+ years, mainly through social media articles and so-called nutrition gurus. But is it really good for you and your health?

You might be a bit shocked at this info... but the only person who seems to have benefited from the alkaline diet is the author of the book who created this controversial advice. Dr Robert Young wrote a book on the alkaline diet, called The pH Miracle: Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health, in 2002. It quickly became a bestseller and made him lots of money, mainly as it was completely new  and wasn't something that people had been told before.

But it was mostly BS. And his advice and recommendations caused a lot of harm to a lot of people.
Young's work and treatments provided at his US-based ranch, were based on the theory that acidity in the body is the cause of disease, and that an alkaline diet is the answer (Financial Review, 2018). But the acidity/alkaline theory was only based on misinformation and misunderstandings of previous studies.

If like me, you frequently see health related social media posts saying that you should eat alkaline foods or drink alkalised water (such as baking soda drinks), or to alkalise your body to improve your health, or even prevent cancer, because (allegedly) cancer cannot survive in an alkaline body... ignore them! These posts are completely wrong!

If you actually follow or implement those ideas, then please read this and consider the real facts, because you may actually be doing your body and your health more harm than good. Sorry...

The facts are:

- acidity or alkalinity is measured on the pH scale from 0 (highly acidic) to 7 (neutral) to 14 (highly basic or alkaline)

- your body has different pH in different fluids and organs for good reasons

- your body only works well within a small pH range for that particular organ or fluid, for example, blood pH should be within 7.35 and 7.45; a very small range, outside of which YOU DIE

-  your saliva or urine pH (from test strips etc) bears no resemblance of what is going on in the rest of your body

- various areas of the body MUST be acidic, to repel bacteria, virus, parasite and yeast infections, such as on your skin and in your stomach and gastrointestinal, urinary and reproductive tracts. These microbes actually LIKE an alkaline environment and thrive in it!

- the stomach being highly acidic will digest foods into their smaller components, which are no longer acidic or alkaline... Hence the foods you eat do NOTHING to either acidify or alkalise your body

- your body has 5 pH buffering (ie, balancing) systems to keep various organs of fluids within the small pH range necessary for optimal function. Consuming too much acidic foods or drinks will simply be balanced out with production of more alkaline compounds and increased excretion of the acids! Or the opposite - if consuming just alkaline foods, this will be countered by the body making more acid compounds to bring the organ or tissues into correct balance again!

- there is the public perception that cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, and therefore why we need to eat and drink more alkaline products and avoid acidic foods. The real fact is that cancer cells have a disordered metabolism and only produce energy via a process called glycolysis, from which a major by-product is lactate, also called lactic ACID! Hence it is the cancer cells producing the acidic environment, NOT the acidic environment causing the cancer...

Then there's my (least) favourite social media health advice of recommending drinking alkalised water with bicarbonate (baking soda) to prevent disease and cancer! This comes from old research from an Italian cancer Doctor Tullio Simoncini who produced research that he killed cancer cells with alkaline baking soda. HOWEVER, he INJECTED baking soda into tumours, and found this killed cancer cells. BUT it isn't actually the alkalinity which kills the cancer cells, but by the "osmotic shift" in fluid from within the cancer cells into the higher alkaline fluid injected into the tumour. The cancer cells became damaged, then dehydrated and died as a result.

Unfortunately people have just taken the "baking soda kills cancer cells" headline and run off with the idea that baking soda and alkalinity can be taken in any form as a cheap and simple cancer prevention or treatment! Nothing could be further from the truth.

Drinking baking soda water will hit your stomach and neutralise some of the stomach acid! This will reduce the effectiveness of the acidic stomach to kill bacteria and viruses and other pathogens (leading to more infections), AND reduce the amount of digestion of foods that the stomach can break down, which in turn means a reduced absorption of digested nutrients which your body really needs, and in turn your entire body and health will suffer. Your stomach needs to be highly acidic in order to properly break down carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins B9 (folate), B12, iron, and to release many minerals which you can then absorb and use. If you don't have enough acidity in your stomach, you won't absorb these nutrients and your health will suffer.

Alkaline foods can be very healthy, but so can acidic foods (tomatoes, citrus, pineapple, and many others). Just because some foods are acidic doesn't mean they are bad, and similarly, just because some foods are alkaline doesn't mean they are healthy! To be healthy, you need to eat a variety of foods, and not restrict your intake based on an incorrect assumption or misinterpretation of a story based on a food's pH level!

Anyway, back to Dr Young... He was recently ordered to pay US$105 MILLION (AUD$146 Million) in damages to just one of his clients, for misrepresenting himself as a medical doctor (which he isn't!), having fraudulent PhD qualifications from a unaccredited institution, recommending a client to stop their medical treatment for cancer to instead do his alkaline treatments which didn't work and the person's cancer progressed to Stage 4 (Financial Review, 2018). As well as the massive fine, he was disqualified from practicing, forced to admit publicly that he isn't a medical doctor or a scientist, and sentenced to several months in jail.

The alkaline diet is a hoax, non-scientific, and completely ridiculous. At best it is useless, but could be quite dangerous for your health.

Stay balanced, and healthy!

Fibre for constipation is a myth & CAN MAKE SYMPTOMS WORSE

Fibre for gut health is a myth, and constipation is not treated from eating more fibre.

There is a general consensus amongst health and medical professionals and the general public that we need "fibre" for our gut health, for our gut microbiome, to reduce or prevent constipation, and for our overall health.

Science is not about having a "consensus" or general agreement of a percentage of people, but of finding the truth.

There is a similar belief that constipation is caused by a lack of fibre, or that consuming MORE fibre will relieve constipation. Nothing could be further from the truth...

Firstly, the definition of constipation is: "Constipation is a condition in which you may have fewer than three bowel movements a week; stools that are hard, dry, or lumpy; stools that are difficult or painful to pass; or a feeling that not all stool has passed" (NIH, 2023).

And the definition of fibre: "Fibre is found in the indigestible parts of cereals, fruits and vegetables, which pass relatively unchanged through our stomach and intestines." (Better Health Channel, 2023). "Fibre" is just cellulose, which humans cannot digest or use.

As a Clinical Nutritionist and Naturopath, my goal for each client is to find all of the root causes of all of their conditions and symptoms. I know that all of their symptoms and conditions are caused by the same few root causes. I also know that Doctors don't think or work this way, and neither do most other health practitioners.

Constipation has many possible causes, and in one person, they can (and usually do) have multiple causes for this symptom. Constipation can be caused by:
  1. Nerve issues, especially of the vagus nerve and its enteric nervous system which controls the digestive tract. These nerve issues can be from poor nerve conduction, or nerve damage
  2. Poor stomach function. If the stomach isn't digesting your foods well, from a lack of acid and enzymes, then you can end up with constipation
  3. Low thyroid function. The thyroid gland controls your metabolic rate and function of every cell and organ, hence a low functioning thyroid will cause low functioning digestive system and therefore constipation
  4. Nutrient deficiencies. Many nutrients are needed by the body and the digestive system to work properly. Contrary to popular belief, constipation is not usually caused by a lack of magnesium, or that constipation is fixed by taking magnesium
  5. Low water intake. Water is not only needed for stomach function but also for digesting foods, motility of the digested foods through the digestive system, and metabolism of nutrients. Low water intake will affect stomach function and cause constipation
  6. Medications. Many medications interfere with normal metabolic functions to cause constipation. Ironically, long-term use of laxative medications (prescribed FOR constipation) can cause constipation as a side effect
  7. Stress. Stress causes many physiological, biochemical and hormone changes, which can slow down digestive functions to cause constipation
  8. Lack of physical activity. Exercise can stimulate digestive system function, or inactivity or a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to constipation
  9. Dysbiosis. An imbalance of your digestive microbiome, which is actually caused from your dietary choices and the result of how well your stomach is working...
  10. Lack of bile salts. From poor liver and gall bladder function
  11. Too many meals per day.
  12. Other causes.

Eating extra fibre will NOT fix constipation for any of these causes of constipation! In fact, I guarantee that eating more fibre will slow down digestive motility and CAUSE or worsen constipation. I've certainly noticed this myself.

"But, but, but... what about the gut microbiome?", I hear you say! The gut microbiome changes with each meal, based on the foods you eat, and how well your stomach is working too. The wider your food variety, and a well-functioning stomach, the better for your gut microbiome. Yes the gut microbiome can use or digest some fibre from our foods, but they are not essential nutrients.

The microbiome is not just in your digestive tract. You have trillions of microbiome on your skin, in various other tracts (reproductive, urinary, respiratory, oral cavity, and more), and in various organs and tissues too. What about the microbiome on or in these areas? Where do they get their fibre from?! They don't. They don't need it.

I've previously been concerned with people who take on a carnivore diet, about their lack of fibre and digestive issues. I've tried this for months and had no issues with constipation at all.

But don't take my word for it - it's in many studies too... Including a 2012 study finding no medical or known causes for constipation in 63 people, who were recommended to go on a NO-FIBRE diet for 2 weeks (Ho, You Mei Tan, Daud, & Seow-Choen, 2012). Those who reduced their fibre intake had a significant improvement in their constipation symptoms, while those who resumed a high fibre diet had no improvement. The no fibre group reduced their (in)frequency of their bowel movements from one every 3.75 DAYS to ONE bowel motion DAILY, which is amazing and a massive improvement. With no fibre. There were additional benefits of NO BLOATING in the no-fibre group too!

In other studies, it is found that people with constipation have similar fibre intake to those who don't have much fibre (Preston & Lennard-Jones, 1986), or that those with chronic constipation have worse symptoms when fibre is increased (Müller-Lissner, Kamm, Scarpignato, & Wald, 2005).

Other issues with fibre, and especially too much fibre, is that it increases the bulk or amount of volume of the stools. Fibre causes congestion or a traffic jam in your digestive tract... hence why increasing more fibre with an IBS or SIBO diagnosis will make your constipation so much worse. Fibre causes your gut microbiome to FERMENT the fibre-rich foods to cause GAS and BLOATING, which is a very common issue.

So much for the common vegan belief that meat causes constipation and fermentation, and that plant foods fix this. It doesn't.

Constipation can be reduced and even completely eliminated (pun intended!), but only by finding and fixing all the root causes in each person. I've fixed chronic constipation in some people who thought they had tried all the medications and supplements for 30-40 years without success. And everyone will be different. If constipation is an issue for you, or anyone you know, then I can help!

Stay healthy!
