It turns out that the manuka plant (also called broom tea tree, or jelly bush) is also found natively in Australia but is less commercially produced than in our neighbouring New Zealand where the Maori word "manuka" and most of the manuka honey comes from. The Australian plants have been recently tested to show similar medicinal qualities to the NZ products, and production in Australia is likely to increase, which is a great potential for our rural industries!
Manuka honey is very popular because of its scientifically-proven antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and wound healing actions! It has even been accepted as a product used in wound management practices in hospitals, added to wound dressings to prevent and kill infections and enable healing. Despite the many billions of dollars spent developing antibiotics to kill bacteria which cause diseases, the bacteria are very smart and can mutate and become antibiotic resistant "super-bugs" to cause even more problems. However, the humble manuka honey can kill these bacteria! Even the dreaded MRSA or "golden staph" and many others.
As a broad-spectrum antimicrobial, manuka honey can be used for many uses, including:
1) for sore throats, tonsilitis, dental or gum infections, dental plaque and biofilms
2) used topically for skin issues - acne, eczema, burns, scalds, ulcers, infections and wounds
3) digestive complaints - SIBO and other gut infections, reflux/heartburn, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
And many more uses!
Manuka honey (and the Australian version) is amazing stuff! But it does have to be a good quality brand, as there are some cheapo imitations around. Manuka honey comes in different strengths of its medicinal content, and rated in UMFs - "Unique Manuka Factor". For thapeutic benefits, needs to have at least a 10 UMF rating. This means it has more antimicrobial strength, and the higher the strength, the higher price. And it is quite expensive! If the Australian production of manuka honey gets going, hopefully the prices should fall!
