Research study finds plastic, heavy metals & more in rice

A very recent Australian study has been published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials on the finding of high concentrations of plastic particles in packaged rice. Having rice contaminated with plastics is oviously not going to be good or healthy for you.

Some key points from this study (Dessì et al, 2021):

• The researchers found micro- and nano-sized plastic contaminants in EVERY rice product, regardless of the type of rice (jasmine, basmati, brown, or other rice type) or if the rice was organic or not, or where the rice was grown
• The amount of plastic in the rice wasn't related to the product being packaged in plastic or whether it was in paper packaging - hence the contamination is not coming from its own packaging but from other sources
• Instant or pre-cooked rice designed to be quickly heated in the microwave oven contained 3-6 times as much plastic contaminants as all other dried rice products
• Washing or rinsing rice before cooking DOES reduce the amount of plastic contaminants significantly, by approximately 20-40%, but not completely
• Plastics are often contaminated with additive chemicals such as BPA and phthalates (oestrogen mimicking chemical, known to cause male and female hormone imbalances), flame retardants, and others which have negative health effects. Heating the plastic increases the release of these chemicals into the food, which you don't want.

As a result of this study, the researchers recommend that store-bought rice be washed or rinsed before being cooked, and avoid the pre-cooked microwavable rice which had MUCH higher concentrations of plastic contaminants.

Rice is also contamined with other things, including agricultural chemicals and heavy metals. Rice has a tendency to absorb more arsenic than other crops. This is concentrated more in the outer layers of the rice - such as in "brown rice", hence one of several reasons why brown rice should be avoided.

The researchers also noted that plastic contaminants have also been found in other foods - honey, beer, meat (packaged on plastic trays), milk, sugar, table salt, bottled water, energy drinks, soft drinks, teas, and other sources.

We have been made aware of how damaging plastics are to the environment and animals, but we should also now be aware that plastics are in many of our foods - mostly in processed and packaged foods. There will be much less contamination of fresh foods which we should be eating more of!

With rice being a staple food for over 50% of the world's population, the findings in this study are a concern. This article is also a reminder to not use plastic water bottles or food containers, especially if the temperature rises (such as when heated or exposed to hot food or the sun)- as more chemicals leach from the plastic into your food. This causes many adverse health effects.

Plastics are bad for the environment, and your health too!

In my consultations, I always ask my clients about their use of plastic products, such as using plastic water bottles, or plastic food containers, or whether foods are cooked in the microwave in "microwave safe" plastic containers. There's no such thing as "safe" plastic!

In short, all plastics leach chemicals into the food or water they contain. And plastics leach chemicals at much greater rates when the plastic or food is warmer, or even when frozen in plastic containers.

The issues with plastics are that the chemicals in them (BP-A, BP-S and similar, PCB, PVC, phthalates, parabens and more) are "endocrine disruptors" or chemicals which mimic or disrupt your body hormones, particularly your sex hormones and mainly the female hormone oestrogen. An increased amount of oestrogen in your body can cause a number of severe and dangerous symptoms or effects, such as:
  • Thyroid hormone disruption (which will affect your metabolic rate and whole body function)
  • Blood sugar imbalances, and poor blood sugar control
  • Male and female infertility
  • Menstrual symptoms - PMS, irregular cycles, painful periods and heavy bleeding and more
  • Premature puberty and menstruation in girls, even as young as 7 years
  • Breast cancers in women and men
  • Ovarian and uterine cancers in women
  • Endometriosis
  • Weight gain
  • Smaller penises and testicles in boys
  • Reduced sperm count in males
  • Genital defects
  • Enlarged prostate in men
  • Prostate cancer in men
  • Manboobs and weight gain in men
  • Gender dysphoria  - a mismatch between physical gender and how one feels, favouring a more female identity especially in males.
Hormone-disrupting and cancer-causing chemicals in plastics can be found in unlikely places, including from:
  • Plastic cookware and utensils
  • Plastic kettles
  • Drinking water from plastic water tanks
  • Chemicals in shampoos, body washes and hair products
  • Cosmetics
  • Fragrances and perfumes
  • Household cleaning products and vinyl products in flooring and cars
  • Childrens' toys
  • Thermal receipts from shops
  • Canned vegetables, especially tomatoes (the cans are lined with BPA)
  • And many more sources.
Excess oestrogens in your body from plastic exposure can have a severe effect on your health. Which is why you need to avoid plastics and their hormone-disrupting chemicals from all sources.

If you have any of the symptoms or conditions above, reducing your exposure to plastics needs to be a key initial step. Additional work will need to be done to reduce your levels of these chemicals,  balance your hormone levels again, and improving your whole body health to recover - which is what I can do!

Are you drinking enough water?

Now that it is Summer again (where I am in Brisbane!), and that means it's hot and humid, and you need to drink more water! I'm not going to tell you to drink 2-3 litres per day! But at least look at the colour of your urine, and if it's not clear or very light yellow - drink some more WATER! No, not just tea, coffee, beer or wine, as these are all diuretic and will make you excrete more water than you are taking in!

The main point of this article is to point out the dangers of using plastic bottles for water - whether it be store-bought plastic bottles of water, or reusable bottles that you carry around, or the kids take to school or those which you keep in the car.

No plastic bottles or containers are safe! They ALL contain toxic chemicals which have been proven to leach into the water (or foods) they contain. It doesn't matter if the plastic is BPA-free, PET, Tupperware or anything. They all leach chemicals into the water, and 50 times more so when they are hot, which is just one reason why you should never use plastic containers in the microwave oven... The chemicals which leach from plastic containers include hormone-disrupting chemicals and cancer-causing chemicals. So you don't want them in your water or food!

If you can try this experiment - put a 1/2 filled plastic bottle of water in your car and leave it there all day in the sun. Then take off the lid and smell the water - it will smell a lot of chemicals. DON'T drink it! In fact, once a bottle has been left in a hot car or in the sun, it should be thrown away. And yes I believe this applies to refillable water bottles which children take to school for the same reason - they get hot in summer and leach chemicals which can affect their health.

There was a problem with BPA plastic a few years ago, proven to disrupt hormones and cause cancer, then this was replaced by BPA-free or BPS plastic... which sure enough after a few years, was shown to have exactly the same issue. No plastic bottles or containers are safe for hot foods or hot conditions. BUT, it has been shown that freezing water or foods in plastic containers has a similar effect.

And let's not forget the environmental damage of all those plastic bottles...

So what bottles should you use?!

For children, stick to stainless steel bottles for their durability. Yes they mostly have plastic lids, but this usually isn't in contact with the water if standing upright. For adults, use stainless steel or glass containers, perhaps with a neoprene or silicon cover to protect it.

Be "water-safe" this summer! Drink plenty of good filtered water, and store it safely too!
