meal replacement options are not real food or healthy

28/6/2016

I'm NOT a fan of commercial meal replacement options as a way of losing weight or getting healthy. I don't care what brands they are, the ones I have investigated are crap, and very bad for you.

The meal replacement brands all make big promises to helping you to lose weight quickly as long as you buy their product and do little else. One product that's dominating the radio adverts lately promises to guys to help them lose weight without you losing all the beers! What a joke! Alcohol gives you 7 calories per gram, compared to carbohydrates only giving you 4 calories per gram. With carbs being a major contributor to weight gain and other adverse health conditions, alcohol is far worse.
If you want to lose weight and be healthier, you need to acknowledge what you may have been doing in the past was wrong and take responsibility for that and make some major changes to your food choices and lifestyle. The marketing of these meal replacement products is that you can get healthier if you made SOME changes, but it's like you can still keep on smoking...
And then we look at the ingredients of these meal replacement products. They are scary. One meal replacement product for weight loss commonly advertised on the TV (Optifast) has two forms of sugar as the second and third highest ingredients, and aspartame, a cancer-causing artificial sweetener, in it as well. I can't see how this works to help with weight loss as sugar is one of the major causes of obesity and weight gain.
Another product is "the man shake" which contains a lot of carbohydrates, and thus contributes to weight gain. It also contains sucralose, an artificial sweetener (also known as "splenda") which has also been shown to cause cancer, and many other negative health effects including an increasing risk of diabetes, digestive conditions and more.
In addition, their suggested menu plan on their website is appalling, with so much food, including having morning tea, afternoon tea and dessert every day (except one day in a fortnight)! Eating a better meal plan and some regular movement or exercise will shift the extra weight far better than this meal replacement program ever will. And you DO have to lose some of the alcohol too.
Weight gain has many factors (of which I have written about here before) - many more than just what you eat or how little exercise you do. Hence to lose weight, you have the address all of the known or possible causes. These meal replacement programs do not fix any of these causes, and as such, they will not work for weight loss in the majority of people. Better would be to get a personalised plan from a Nutritionist and Naturopath that first identifies YOUR causes and treats your causes.
If weight gain is an issue for you, I'd like to help you with real, scientifically proven methods, that are still healthy and actually work! And without buying expensive artificial food full of unhealthy junk.

choosing food for alkalinity is pointless & harmful!

27/6/2016

There is a lot of misinformation about acidity and alkalinity in our foods and in our bodies, which I would like to neutralise! Sorry, the pun is fully intended! ;-)
If like me, you frequently see health related social media posts saying that you should eat alkaline foods or drink alkalised water (such as baking soda drinks) to improve your health, or even prevent cancer, because (allegedly) cancer cannot survive in an alkaline body... ignore them! These posts are wrong!

If you actually follow or implement those ideas, then please read this and consider the real facts, because you may actually be doing your body and your health more harm than good. Sorry...

The facts are:
- acidity or alkalinity is measured on the pH scale from 0 (highly acidic) to 7 (neutral) to 14 (highly basic or alkaline)
- your body has different pH in different fluids and organs for good reasons
- your body only works well within a small pH range for that particular organ or fluid, for example, blood pH should be within 7.35 and 7.45; a very small range, outside of which YOU DIE
-  your saliva or urine pH (from test strips etc) bears no resemblance of what is going on in the rest of your body
- various areas of the body MUST be acidic, to repel bacteria, virus and yeast infections, such as on your skin and in your stomach and gastrointestinal, urinary and reproductive tracts. These microbes LIKE an alkaline environment and thrive in it!
- your body has 5 pH buffering (ie, balancing) systems to keep various organs of fluids within the small pH range necessary for good health. Providing too much acidic foods or drinks will simply be balanced out with production of more alkaline compounds and increased excretion of the acids!
- there is the public perception that cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, and therefore why we need to eat and drink more alkaline products and avoid acidic foods. The real fact is that cancer cells have a disordered metabolism and only produce energy via a process called glycolysis, from which a major byproduct is lactate, also called lactic ACID! Hence it is the cancer cells producing the acidic environment, NOT the acidic environment causing the cancer...

Then there's my (least) favourite social media health post recommending drinking alkalised water with bicarbonate (baking soda) to prevent disease and cancer! This comes from old research from an Italian cancer doctor Simoncini who produced research that he killed cancer cells with alkaline baking soda. HOWEVER, he INJECTED baking soda into tumours, and found this killed cancer cells. BUT it isn't actually the alkalinity which kills the cancer cells, but by the "osmotic shift" in fluid from within the cancer cells into the higher alkaline fluid injected into the tumour. The cancer cells dehydrated and died as a result.

Unfortunately people have just taken the "baking soda kills cancer cells" headline and run off with the idea that baking soda and alkalinity can be taken in any form as a cheap and simple cancer prevention or treatment! Nothing could be further from the truth.

Drinking baking soda water will hit your stomach and neutralise some of the stomach acid! This will reduce the effectiveness of the acidic stomach to kill bacteria and viruses and other pathogens (leading to more infections), AND reduce the amount of digestion of foods that the stomach can break down, which in turn means a reduced absorption of digested nutrients which your body really needs, and in turn your entire body and health will suffer. Your stomach needs to be highly acidic in order to properly break down carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins B9 (folate), B12, and other nutrients which you can then use. If you don't have enough acidity in your stomach, you won't get these nutrients and your health will suffer.

Alkaline foods can be very healthy, but so can acidic foods (tomatoes, citrus, pineapple, and many others). Just because some foods are acidic doesn't mean they are bad, and similarly, just because some foods are alkaline doesn't mean they are healthy! To be healthy, you need to eat a variety of foods, and not restrict your intake based on an incorrect assumption or misinterpretation of  a story based on a food's pH level!

Having good health and preventing diseases like cancer is more about what NUTRIENTS are in those foods and how well your digestive system is functioning, and avoiding chemicals and toxins that our modern foods are exposed to.

This is why you need to ignore the hype and see a qualified nutritionist or naturopath, like me, for the facts on improving your health, and preventing and treating health conditions!

Why does wheat cause so many health problems?

25/6/2016

I have just watched the "What's with wheat?" documentary (24th June 2016), and I applaud the producers, and the scientists, nutritionists, doctors, farmers and other contributors to the documentary for making this information available to the wider community! It's not just about wheat, but also about corn, the environment, food processing, farming practices, makeup and beauty products, the use of toxic herbicides and pesticides (like Roundup/glyphosate), genetics, and the effects that all of these have on your health.

Much of this information is what I have researched and understood for a few years about grains, and have been implementing myself, for my family and for my clients, with great results in improving their health!

As wheat, corn and other grain products have been a huge part of our diets and lifestyles for generations, making some changes to reduce wheat consumption can be a challenge, and I understand that. But to improve your health, reduce many symptoms and even reverse chronic disease conditions, you need to make some changes to get a different or better result to your health. There are some simple changes you can make to avoid the issues with wheat (and corn) and I'd be happy to help you with this, including advice, alternatives, or other healthier meal choices for you and your family.

If you are wondering what might be any complications from not eating wheat, well... nothing! All the good nutrients in wheat are found in all other foods, such as vegetables, nuts, seeds, and others. You won't be missing anything - other than perhaps the brain fog, neurological conditions, digestive upsets, weight gain, diabetes, mental health issues, lack of energy, high cholesterol, heart disease, autoimmune conditions, cancer, allergies, skin conditions and more adverse health effects that wheat and corn products can cause!

If you haven't registered or watched the "What's with wheat?" documentary yet, you can watch it for free from the link below for the next 7 days online (until 1st July), or consider purchasing it to watch again or to show your family and friends too. Feel free to share this to them too!

Then see me for advice to make the changes that you need.

Here's the link to register, watch or buy the documentary:

more new science shows cholesterol is not the enemy!

18/6/2016

I have written about cholesterol and heart health before (see other articles below), and how the media, government sources and medical profession are still telling you that cholesterol is bad for you and that it increases your risk of heart disease. But the scientific research on cholesterol over the past 20+ years shows the opposite!

Let's get some background info... cholesterol is allegedly bad because it is found in the walls of blood vessels, which over time can lead to blockages, clots and heart attacks. Then there's the allegedly "good" HDL cholesterol, and the "bad" LDL cholesterol.

In reality however, cholesterol is cholesterol - there are no good and bad types! Cholesterol is a protein for transporting fats around in the blood. Cholesterol is needed in the body to make new cells, help digest our food, make all of our sex hormones, and other essential hormones without which we would die. A reduced cholesterol intake (cholesterol is only found in animal foods) causes your body will make all the cholesterol it needs every day anyway. However if you eat a diet high in cholesterol-rich foods, your body will need to make less for what it needs. Cholesterol is also needed for healthy cell walls and a better response to body hormones. The smaller "good" HDL actually pick up accumulated fat molecules out of atherosclerotic plaques in blood vessels to take it to the liver or other organs for reuse. The larger "bad" LDL carry fat molecules to the cells for use in energy production, making of hormones, making new cells and more uses. LDL is therefore not bad at all - it's all good!

All of this information was backed up again today (16th June 2016) with a new published paper in one of the most prestigious medical journals - the British Medical Journal - reviewing many other studies done on high LDL cholesterol levels (the "bad" one) in relation to it increasing the risk of death in older people (over 60 years). This paper reviewed 19 other studies done on over 68,000 people and found that high LDL cholesterol was NOT associated with an increased risk of death from any cause or heart disease. In fact 92% of the participants showed a REDUCED risk of death with a higher cholesterol level! These conclusions confirm many other research articles I've read on the subject recently.

The analogy of cholesterol is of a fireman at the scene of a fire. While the fireman is found at the fire, it isn't the cause of the fire! Cholesterol is found in narrowed or blocked blood vessels (ie, atherosclerosis) but it is not the cause of the problem. Chronic (long-term) inflammation causes damage to the lining of blood vessels, and cholesterol is deposited on the damaged walls to protect the blood vessels. Continued inflammation, from a poor nutrient intake of too much sugar and processed carbohydrates including whole grains, high intake of oxidised fats, not enough antioxidant foods, high blood sugar, toxins and other factors are just some of the causes of inflammation of blood vessels, and therefore the cause of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and heart disease.

Only by looking at the causes of inflammation and heart disease and resolving the causes can the risk of heart disease be reduced or eliminated. Statin medications (prescribed to reduce cholesterol) don't fix the cause (they just hide the symptoms) and actually make your health worse. Another study done in 2013, also in the BMJ, it was found that simply adopting a Mediterranean diet is 3 times more powerful at reducing your risk of death from heart disease than taking a statin!

My family has a history of heart disease and dying too young. I don't want the same for you and your family because of the misinformation or dangerous advice about low fat diets and cholesterol. That's why I'd like to help you and your family to reduce your risk of heart disease with advice that is based on recent and independent scientifically proven research.

If you think your blood pressure or cholesterol levels are high or if you have a family history of heart disease, there is a lot that can be done for prevention or treatment with a Naturopathic consultation to find the cause and treat the cause, not the effects.

nutrigenomics: your best treatment plan for you!

13/6/2016

One of the most exciting areas of Nutritional Medicine and Naturopathy today is in Nutrigenomics - the study of how your genes affect your metabolism and use of your food intake, which in turn affects your health. Nutrigenomics looks into your genetic makeup, to see why your body reacts to certain foods or supplements, or why you might have certain health conditions, even when you have a healthy diet!

A very simple saliva test can be taken and sent away for genetic testing, and the results will take a couple of weeks to be sent back. I can then interpret the data and provide reports which show you:
1) Your ancestry origins on both your parent' s lineages
2) Any genetic "defects" or anomalies which can affect your digestion and utilisation of your foods, or which foods you should actually avoid based on your genes.

We are all unique! Our genes and DNA show this. Hence we all have different responses to the foods we eat. This is another reason why the government or medical guidelines for what you should be eating do not work - they do not take your individual genetics into account. Medical professionals say "we are all the same" and hence we should all eat the standard recommendations. Experienced Nutritionists and Naturopaths say "we are all different" and help people on a more personalised level, which is how it should be!

I have seen in practice that healthy foods or specific supplements which are supposed to be good for everyone, will work well for one person, but may not work for someone else. An example is "folic acid" or vitamin B9 which can cause adverse reactions in some people with a specific genetic defect, so this vitamin (often used in multivitamins and pregnancy vitamins) and should NOT be taken by those people. Then there's the "activated" form of this vitamin (methylfolate) which should be used for people with this issue, but CANNOT be used for people with a different genetic defect!
Alternatively, we all know people who can eat all the wrong foods and not put on weight or get sick - because they will have different genes to you! You might be doing all the right things with your diet, but you may still have weight or health issues.

The only way to know whether you are going to have a positive or negative reaction for a supplement or some foods is to get a genetic test such as the one I am now offering as a new service!
If you have a specific genetic defect which is related to the digestion and utilisation of foods and if you are following the generalised "we are all the same" food guidelines then this is a recipe for disaster for your health. This can lead to many different chronic (long-term) health conditions, simply because you may not be eating the right foods for YOU and YOUR genes!

I use a US-based genetic testing company which checks for about 600,000 genetic defects in a simple and non-invasive saliva test. Once I have the test results, I interpret the data for the nutritional and metabolic genes, then a detailed report is produced. Your report includes a detailed explanation and what you should  do to improve your health, based on your genes!

Some common conditions or signs for which there are genetics defects causing nutrient or metabolic effects include autism spectrum disorders, heart disease, mental health issues, degenerative brain conditions, fatigue, fertility and pregnancy issues, inflammation, and other chronic (long-term) health conditions.

A genetic test and nutrigenomics can help to tailor a holistic treatment, nutrients and supplements specifically to you, as we are all different! To find out more about nutrigenomics or to arrange for your genetic test, please contact me.

Government nutrition guidelines are not to be trusted

13/6/2016

The CSIRO have updated their "Healthy diet score check" on their website (see link below) for you to check and see how "healthy" your food intake is, compared to the government guidelines.

From my looking at the real nutrition research studies, the government food guidelines are NOT based on recent or independent scientific research, but on corporate interests to maintain their profits. Various food industries have their say in these guidelines, as do government bodies, docto...rs untrained in nutrition, and even the supermarkets have a say in them! What an absolute joke!

These guidelines are benefiting their profits, but not your health.
Also, they assume that everyone is the same and hence we should all eat the same. As an experienced Nutritionist (and now Naturopath) I know this to be completely incorrect - everyone is different! We all have our individual tolerances (and intolerances) of various foods, because of many factors including our ethnicity and genetic makeup.

This is why my results of the survey only rate me at 59/100 - because for very good scientific and personal reasons I don't eat many whole grains and next to no dairy... I have tons of organic vegies, organic and grass-fed meat, a LOT of healthy fats (which in their eyes is unhealthy), yet I am apparently unhealthy and need to eat more toxic grains, toxic milk, toxic polyunsaturated oils and GMO canola oil... But I don't have any medical or weight issues, and I've seen a GP once since 1991!
For a laugh, have a look at the CSIRO check in this link:

www.csiro.au/en/Research/Health/CSIRO-diets/CSIRO-Healthy-Diet-Score

and write your score in the comments with your thoughts!

political interference in your health treatment choices

12/6/2016

In 2015, The Australian Department of Health in conjunction with The National Health and Medical Research Council formed a committee to review natural therapies to examine their clinical efficacy, cost effectiveness and safety. Based on a very restrictive search of research studies they concluded that there was little evidence that 17 natural therapies were clinically effective, and hence the government and health funds should not consider health fund rebates for such therapies in the future.

The 17 natural therapies being considered for removal of government and health fund rebates include Herbal Medicine, Naturopathy, Massage therapy, Pilates, Tai chi, Yoga, Aromatherapy and more!

The committee formed this decision by only looking at published research of natural therapies "being delivered as a health service", and excluded the massive amount of peer reviewed and published evidence on the individual treatments in those therapies. As there weren't many studies published on these therapies "being delivered as a health service" this lead to their pathetic recommendations. Of the studies that were available on these therapies, they did show that the therapies were effective, safe, had very little or no safety issues (ed: which would put modern medicine treatments of surgery and pharmaceuticals to shame!) and were cost effective by being cheaper and allowing patients to return to work quicker! But all of that counted for nothing all because of the low numbers of studies found due to the committee's restrictions.

In my chosen fields of Naturopathy and Herbal Medicine (as Nutritional Medicine was excluded from the committee's investigation), everything I use and recommend is evidence -based, which was how I was taught! In each of my assignments and case studies I had to find 50-100+ peer-reviewed and published scientific articles to show how and why a particular recommendation was scientifically proven for a client with a particular health condition! And what I found was only a tiny drop in the ocean of published research, yet this bunch of biased morons on this committee designed their search to not allow any of this evidence!

Anyone who has used any of the above natural therapies will know that they work, that they are safe and have far less side effects than taking medications, having unnecessary surgeries or other dangerous medical treatments. In a peer-reviewed and published Cochrane review of traditional Western medical treatments a few years ago, about 70% of medications, surgeries or treatments were found to NOT be effective or safe in research! Should these treatments be removed from health fund rebates too?!

The Labor party have today (10th June 2016) announced that they will drop private health insurance rebates for natural therapies, just to save some $. But these natural therapies already save the government a massive amount of money by taking the strain off the health system, actually fixing the causes of health conditions, instead of just hiding symptoms which force the problem deeper into the body and making it worse in the long term.

If this decision by Labor (and potentially by the other major parties too) is of concern to you and your family's health, please ask your local member for their policy on this matter. If their answer is not satisfactory, please consider looking at the policies of a new political party in the upcoming Federal elections - the Health Australia Party (HAP), which not only have policies to do with your health, but for a healthy economy, healthy environment, healthy democracy and healthy society! HAP may have a candidate in your local area, but they are mostly looking for seats in the Senate, so please consider HAP as a healthier choice! Take a stand in this election, and have your voice heard!

winter is coming! cold & Flu prevention (part 3)

12/6/2016

Here is part 3 of my recent "cold and flu prevention" article... enjoy! (please see parts 1 & 2 in other articles below)

Winter is coming! The key to staying healthy this coming Winter is prevention and preparation!
One of the best ways of preventing colds and flu is being aware what you eat! There are well known and researched foods and nutrient ingredients which keep the immune system strong to fight any infection.

There are other foods and nutrients which have anti-viral actions against the cold and flu viruses, to prevent their replication in the body, and this allows the immune system to attack and remove the virus and virus-infected cells.

Then there are other foods that actually suppress the immune system, make your symptoms worse, and extend the duration of your cold or flu. So not only do you need to eat the right nutrients, but avoid others for the best prevention and a quicker recovery.

How do you know which foods are immune-boosting, anti-viral or immune-suppressive? You ask your friendly Nutritionist & Naturopath! That's me!

In contrast, the typical medications prescribed for colds and flu only reduce the symptoms. Those symptoms (runny nose, coughing, lots of mucus and fever) are actually needed to get the infection, the virus and wastes OUT of the body and help you recover quicker. Suppressing symptoms with medications will therefore keep the infection in the body for longer and you will feel sicker or worse, cause your cold or flu to progress into a more serious condition of bronchitis or pneumonia.

This Winter, prevent colds and flu with the right immune-system boosting foods (or supplements), and avoiding the wrong foods that make symptoms worse.

In the next article I will discuss the little known but major cause of most colds and flu and why we get more of them in Winter!

weight loss is not about calories in vs. calories out

12/6/2016

As a Nutritionist (and now Naturopath) I don't believe in the idea that weight gain is a result of a deficit of calories (ie, more calories in vs. less calories out). This idea has been disproven many times in recent research.

There are MANY causes of weight gain (as I have written about previously in my articles below) so having to weigh all your food, count the calories of all the macronutrients (carbs, protein, fats etc), restrict your food intake, struggle through craving...s and hunger, and all while exercising more, is all pointless! It just doesn't work!

Restricting foods because of their calories leads to nutrient deficiencies, chronic disease conditions (ie, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression and many other conditions) and even more weight gain - as your body adapts to the reduced food intake to slow down metabolism to store more fat instead!
Your health is not determined by how many (or few) calories you eat! Just because something is low in calories (ie, the carcinogenic artificial sweetener, aspartame) doesn't mean it is healthy, or that something is high in calories (ie, an avocado) doesn't mean that it is unhealthy!
The calories from the macronutrients are all used differently in your body, and differently again in other people!
Things that are important for a healthy weight are:
1) what nutrients your foods actually contain
2) how your foods are used in your body, or how they affect your body
3) your genes and your ethnicity
4) whether you are stressed, as you will not digest or absorb your foods well
5) when are you eating, how you cook your meals, and how much you eat
6) composition of your meals - % of carbohydrates, proteins and fats
7) how well your digestive system is functioning
8) and many more factors!

There are many things that need to be taken into consideration to losing weight, which is what I look at, for helping people to lose weight!

What are the right foods to eat, or the wrong ones to avoid? That can be a very individual thing - what may be good for someone else may not be good for you! Contact me to see how I can help you with a personalised plan!
