Does "leaky gut" cause autoimmune Conditions?

31/7/2016

More and more of the health conditions I see in practice are what are known as "autoimmune" conditions. This means that your immune system is mistakenly attacking your own cells or organs as if they were a foreign bacteria or virus. With there being more than 80 known autoimmune conditions, is there anything that can be done for them? Yes!

Many autoimmune conditions can affect one specific organ, such as the pancreas (in type 1 diabetes), the bowel (in Coeliac disease, ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease), the joints (in rheumatoid arthritis) and many more. Some autoimmune conditions can affect multiple organs or the whole body such as SLE or "lupus".

The typical medical approach is to suppress the immune system function with medications (such as corticosteroids, anti-inflammatories or even chemotherapy) so it isn't attacking the body or organs as much. This creates some major problems as 1) this doesn't fix the cause of the problem, 2) these medications will cause side effects often worse than the condition itself, and 3) you NEED your immune system functioning properly to prevent infections, or else you will get frequent illnesses, symptoms of a worse condition or even cancer.

So how then can Naturopathy help? I work differently by finding the cause(s) of your autoimmune condition, of which there are several, including environmental triggers, poor digestive and immune system function, dietary choices, toxic chemical exposure, stress, hormones and infections. I can also look at getting a genetic test to see what genetic issues you may have which can be possible causes or hindering normal treatment. I develop a personalised treatment plan and work with you to resolve your specific causes, which is further helped by having the results of the genetic test. By clearing the causes, your symptoms will reduce and your health with greatly improve!

If you have any form of autoimmune condition, I would love to help you!

Type 2 diabetes - preventable and reversible

15/7/2016

This week is National Diabetes Week, to help raise awareness of this range of chronic conditions and hopefully prevent more people from being diagnosed with diabetes.

The most common form is type 2 diabetes is completely preventable and reversible, without the need for any medication or insulin. Recent research confirms this, as I have also seen with clients.
Unfortunately the diabetes foundations, charities or awareness groups are still recommending the wrong advice for prevention and treatments for diabetes, despite the mountain of evidence of more effective options.
Type 2 diabetes is a result of poor dietary and lifestyle choices, partly because of poor advice from the government food guidelines on what you should eat and the media. In type 2, the body becomes resistant to the effects of the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels (amongst many other things). This leads to high blood sugar levels which is toxic and inflammatory to the body, causing weight gain, nerve damage, then high blood pressure, which in turn causes eye damage, kidney damage, poor circulation and healing (and eventual amputation of limbs) and death if untreated. Other hormones and other factors play a part in the development and progression of diabetes too.
The medical approach to treatment is to reduce calories or kJ intake especially saturated fat, with exercise and medications. There's some major problems with this approach - 1) medications do not address the cause of the problem, and 2) reducing overall kJ or saturated fat will do next to nothing for reversing the condition, and may likely make your health worse...
Why? Because type 2 diabetes is a condition of an abnormal insulin response. What causes an insulin response? Carbohydrates and proteins. Not fats, and certainly not saturated fats. Carbohydrates cause the highest insulin effects in the body, in particular sugary foods and drinks, fruit juices, whole grain products (whole grains, breakfast cereals, pasta, bread and other bakery products), dairy (high in sugar), and alcoholic drinks. Many of these foods we are told are "healthy" in the government food guidelines - whole grain products, fruit juice, and dairy! The government food advice is causing this current epidemic of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic health conditions.
Reducing unhealthy carbohydrates such as those above will reduce the insulin response, reduce high blood sugar levels to normal, reduce weight, reduce blood pressure and stop the other signs and symptoms of diabetes.
Of course there is more to preventing and reversing diabetes than just reducing unhealthy carbohydrates, but that's where I can help as a Nutritionist and Naturopath! I can help with personalised nutritional and lifestyle advice, for the easiest and most effective results!

COLD & flu prevention (part 4) - the main cause is...

Here is part 4 of my recent "cold and flu prevention" article... enjoy! (please see parts 1-3 in other articles below)

The key to staying healthy this coming Winter is prevention and preparation!
Why do we get more colds and flu in Winter? I have heard doctors/GPs saying that we get more because there are more bugs going around in Winter, or they are more active. That is nonsensical and goes against the laws of physics! Viruses (which cause colds and flu) and bacteria are all around us, on us and in us all the time! We only get ill when our immune systems are not functioning well to stop them replicating out of control to cause illness.
The real answer to why we get more infections in Winter is very simple, and can be answered with further questions. What is the difference between Summer and Winter? The temperature, caused by the sun being further away and a shorter amount of daily sunlight! What does this have to do with colds and flu? Well, in Summer there is more sunlight and we spend more time outside in the sun, the opposite of Winter. Your body makes vitamin D from direct sunlight exposure on your skin, and vitamin D is a MASSIVE immune system booster, antioxidant and hormone, all required for many health benefits!
In Winter, you generally spend less time outside because it's colder, and with less skin exposed to sunlight (needed to make vitamin D), and the majority of people in Winter are deficient in vitamin D. The further from the equator you are, the more difficult it is to get enough from vitamin D in Winter. Therefore your immune system will not be functioning optimally to prevent colds, flu, cancer and many other infections or health conditions. Further adding to a lowered immune system function are a poor diet, stress, lack of exercise, exposure to toxins and chemicals, poor sleep, lifestyle and other factors.
Much scientific research proves that a vitamin D deficiency is THE major cause of colds and flu in Winter, because of a reduced immune system function. In Winter you need to spend about 3 times as much time in the sun to get the same amount of vitamin D as in Summer.
In an American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study (2010), it was shown there was a 42% reduction in flu infections with vitamin D supplementation. Another study in the Virology Journal (2008) found that a vitamin D deficiency is the cause of flu epidemics.
To prevent colds and flu this Winter, you need to be prepared and do all you can to increase your immune system function by addressing all causes, and also preventing or replacing your deficiency in vitamin D with a nutritional supplement in a capsule, spray or oral drops form.
To prevent the incidence of colds and flu this Winter, OR to recover quicker remember this: "Vitamin D is the key!".
For the best vitamin D supplement for you, or other immune system boosting and preventative advice, please see me!
