the cholesterol and heart disease myth

28/2/2016

I see too many clients in my clinic who are worried about their cholesterol levels, particularly as they get older. There is much confusion and misinformation about this topic, so here are some facts based on recent research:

1) Cholesterol is a compound found in animal products - eggs, meats, and dairy. Our bodies naturally make cholesterol - so even being a vegetarian or vegan, you will make more cholesterol than a meat-eater because your body needs it for many purposes!
2) Cholesterol is NOT linked to a diet high in saturated fats as was once believed! Nor is a diet high in cholesterol responsible for your high blood cholesterol! This is because the body makes enough cholesterol for what it needs. If you eat less cholesterol, your body makes more & vice versa.
3) The reason why cholesterol is perceived as unhealthy is because it is found in plaques in blood vessels, which restrict the blood flow and over time can block the flow, causing pain, cell death, stroke or heart attacks. In truth, the analogy of cholesterol is that it is like a fireman at the scene of a fire. Yes cholesterol is found in arterial plaques, but it is NOT the cause of them! (read what does cause them below...)
4) There is no such thing as "good" cholesterol and "bad" cholesterol. Cholesterol is cholesterol and it's all good! Also, over 50% of people who have had heart attacks or heart disease do not have high cholesterol levels! So there is something else other than cholesterol that causes heart disease in most people.
5) Heart disease risk has been shown in research to not be increased by saturated fat intake! Saturated fat, despite popular belief, actually protects the heart! Reducing fat in the diet in research studies did not reduce the risk of heart disease.
6) The US Department of Agriculture and Health and Human Services changed the US dietary guidelines on the intake of cholesterol in foods in 2015, stating that "cholesterol is not a nutrient of concern", based on recent research.
7) Cholesterol is an essential substance without which we would not be alive! We actually need cholesterol in our bodies for making our hormones, making the walls of hundreds of millions of new cells each day, carrying fat-soluble nutrients around in the blood to all cells, making bile which helps us digest fats in the diet. With low cholesterol, many health problems occur.
8) If that's not enough evidence against cholesterol being a baddy, a 2011 study on over 52,000 people with a followup period of 10 years, found that the higher your cholesterol was, the longer you lived! What?!

So if it's not dietary sources of cholesterol which causes high blood cholesterol and plaques, then what does?! This might shock you...

High cholesterol and arterial plaques are more caused by a combination of factors:
1) A diet high in sugar, fruit juice, whole grains and bakery products (because they are highly processed carbohydrates)
2) A diet high in trans fat, from processed foods, margarine and fried foods
3) A diet high in oxidised vegetable oils (when vegetable oils are heated)
4) A diet low in vegetables, fibre and antioxidants
5) And having a sedentary lifestyle (ie, not much exercise or movement).

Eating a "low fat" diet because you are worried about saturated fats and cholesterol is unfounded and is not based on quality or recent scientific research. It doesn't help to improve your health because "low fat" diets or foods cause insulin resistance, or effectively, diabetes, and unhealthy blood cholesterol levels, which is what you are wanting to avoid.

Unfortunately if your total cholesterol over about 7 then your GP will probably recommend or prescribe a statin medication to stop or prevent your body from making cholesterol. Because we actually make cholesterol naturally every day for many purposes, having less cholesterol results in a LOT of unhealthy side-effects, including low energy, poor memory and concentration, muscle and joint pains, headaches, nausea, liver damage, increased blood sugar (ie diabetes).

In a recent study in the prestigious British Medical Journal, it was found that simply adopting a Mediterranean diet is 3 times more powerful at reducing your risk of death from heart disease than taking a statin! Imagine just changing your diet to improve your health, and it being more effective than a prescription medication! The Mediterranean diet includes a moderate amount of animal products, healthy fats (olive oil, non-lean meats), and this was found to be 30% better in reducing cardiovascular issues than a low-fat diet, as well as preventing plaques and high blood pressure!
I am not suggesting that you should stop taking your statin medication, but by working with your GP, and myself to improve your diet and lifestyle, you may find that you need to take less medications and have a greater quality of life!

The best medicine for heart health as well as for your whole body is to prevent or reduce the causes of cardiovascular issues, with a holistic (whole body) treatment plan - which is what I do!

talcum powder (baby powder) linked to cancers

26/2/2016

As a holistic nutritionist, I don't just help people with their diets, but on lifestyle improvements, education and preventative strategies as well. This is a good example of a product that we may innocently use in our lives, but can severely affect our health...

It has been suspected for a while that talcum powder (ie, baby powder) was linked to ovarian cancers, and it seems that the courts in the USA have agreed with the scientific evidence and ordered the personal and cleaning products company Johnson & Johnson to pay about $100 million (Australian) in compensation to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer from using their products.
A search of "talcum powder and cancer" among online scientific research papers finds thousands of studies linking talcum powder to various cancers.
Why would talcum/baby powder cause cancer? Because the powder is a mineral that contains some asbestos in its natural form or from contamination, and asbestos is a known carcinogen (ie, it causes cancer). Asbestos in talcum powder can also cause mesothelioma (fibrosis of the lungs) and potentially lung cancer if it is inhaled, as well as breast tumours and other gynaecological tumours when used on those areas.

For your health and safety and that of your family and friends, if you have any talcum powder, please throw it away! Please share this message so others are informed too.

Does the paleo diet cause weight gain and diabetes?

25/2/2016

I have previously written about the Paleo diet in an article below. The Paleo diet copped another battering in the media this week when an Australian study was made public that this diet can lead to rapid weight gain and insulin levels (ie, type 2 diabetes) in the body.

I have read the study and some of the facts hidden from the media articles are:
1) The study believes incorrectly that the Paleo diet is Low Carbohydrate and High Fat (LCHF) and was configured as such.
2) The study was done on just 9 mice, over an 8-week period. Mice don't have the same metabolism or biochemistry, the number of them isn't anywhere near enough for scientific relevance, and an 8-week period is not really long enough.
3) The mice used were a genetically modified (GM) breed, which have altered metabolism so they develop severe obesity, type 2 diabetes and autoimmune conditions - hence they are already diseased, and aren't suitable test subjects or likely to produce any valid conclusions relevant to humans.
4) The Paleo diet is NOT low carb! It is high in vegetables and fruits, which contain mostly carbs! However the Paleo diet is very low in processed carbs, meaning no sugar, milk, breads, or any other grain products. This is a lot different to the study where the only carbs (6% of their diet) came from simple sugar, which is NOT a healthy carbohydrate!
5) The Paleo diet is NOT high fat! It has a higher fat content, but healthy fats found in eggs, avocadoes, fish, grass-fed meats, nuts and seeds. These healthy fats do not contribute to weight gain in body fat! In the study, a whopping 81% of the diets for the GM mice was fat! This isn't a valid representation of the Paleo diet either.

And I could go on... with such a biased study design, the conclusions just defy logic and contradict all independent research studies on nutrition and the causes of diabetes.

This is the problem with modern science that is dominated by limited research funding being provided by corporates wanting a positive spin in research studies so they can maintain their profits. As a result, studies like this one can be biased from the beginning and deliberately setup to get the results they want. Only by looking into the real facts of such studies with a critical eye can issues like this be found. Unfortunately the media don't check this and they just feed you what the biased press release tells them! It's corporate profits trumping over your health, sadly.

So what does cause weight gain and diabetes? Your diet certainly plays a part, with excessive sugar and processed carbohydrates causing high blood sugar levels and high insulin levels, with insulin converting the excess blood sugar into body fat. A diet higher in healthy fats does not raise blood sugar or insulin levels, and does not contribute to body fat!

There are many other factors that lead to weight gain and diabetes too - stress, lifestyle factors, environmental factors, poor sleep quality/quantity, and various nutritional deficiencies, and more. This is what I can help you with - finding the causes and resolving them, to bring you back to health!

"new" immune therapy for cancer treatment

18/2/2016

Cancer is one of the most dreaded diagnoses because of what most people have seen or experienced in their families. But it shouldn't be like that.

Some of you may have seen the "latest" potential cancer treatment in the news, which in some recent tests involves taking some white blood cells out of the body, then the cells are modified somehow, returned to the body and "trained" to destroy cancer cells. It sounds amazing, except this isn't new at all!

Your body's white blood cells, in particular the CD4+ T-cells and NK (Natural Killer) cells, have a primary task every day to find and destroy virus-infected AND cancer cells! They do this naturally without any help!

However you need to provide the right conditions for these immune system cells to be able to do their job to prevent damaged cells (ie cancer cells) from getting out of control. As your foods are your building blocks of your cells, what you eat is central to the prevention and treatment of cancer. But there's a lot more to it than that - your digestive system function needs to be optimal, stresses need to be removed and handled better, and other lifestyle and environmental factors will need to be investigated and improved too. This is the holistic (whole body) approach to Nutritional Medicine, which I do.

You don't need to wait for this "new" treatment. It can be done now! I would like to be able to help you sooner rather than later.

See my cancer information page here for more details.

Getting a good nights sleep is not just something you need to recharge your batteries at the end of the day! Sleep is needed for:

1) Growth, particularly in children
2) Maintenance and repair of the body
3) Memory consolidation and learning
4) Detoxification and waste processing
and other purposes too!

Sleep difficulties are no laughing matter for people who can't sleep well. Symptoms of poor sleep include:

1) Difficulty getting to sleep
2) Waking during the night
3) Waking up tired
4) Poor concentration and memory
5) Poor immune system function and frequent infections
6) Depression
7) Weight gain.

There can be many reasons or causes for you not sleeping well, and can include dietary, environmental, lifestyle, stress and other factors. I have a range of options to help you sleep better, as it is something that I had difficulty with for a while too. Improving your sleep can make a huge difference to your health, your life and how you feel!

If sleep difficulties are a problem for you (or someone you know), please contact me!

holistic treatment works to clear acne in 4 weeks!

10/2/2016

Being (or having) a teenager can be a challenge with the physical changes occurring, and the effect this has on teenagers' mental and emotional health. The last thing that a teenager needs on top of these changes, and the stresses at school, is the physical and emotional complications of acne!

Call them zits, pimples, or spots, these can be seen to be the worst thing in the world, and come at the worst time in life - just when teens are finding out about themselves, their changing bodies and taking an interest in potential boyfriends or girlfriends!

The physical signs of acne are obvious, and can range from just one or two at a time to a severe outbreak on the face, neck, chest and back that can result in cysts and life-long scarring. The mental, emotional and social aspects of health can be severely affected too, with acne generally being perceived as worse than it really is, and thus affecting one's confidence and self-esteem, and this can lead to depression, anxiety and other mental health issues that can last a long time.

I recently had an adult client who had a sudden onset of acne which was very unusual for her. She was very depressed about her looks and had isolated herself away for months from her studies and friends. She went down the medical path - GPs and 3 dermatologists, who all recommended Roaccutane (a very strong medication for severe cystic acne, which hers wasn't) so she took for 3 weeks until the side effects were too much to handle. In that time though, the acne worsened instead of getting better. She refused to take any more of this drug, and saw her dermatologist again, who prescribed antibiotics and a topical cream instead. Again these medications made the acne worse, and now spread to all over her chest. She was very depressed and almost suicidal.

In desperation, she contacted me to see how I could help. 2 weeks later her skin was much improved and 2 more weeks later her skin was completely clear from any acne! I knew the treatment plan would work, but was surprised how quickly it cleared!

The medical treatment from the doctors didn't work because it didn't address her causes, and didn't address her body or her unique circumstances. I treated her hole body on many different aspects of her health (physical, mental, emotional and environmental), which included dietary changes/substitutions, lifestyle improvements and some short-term nutritional supplementation to help with the healing process.

Contrary to some old research, your diet does play a role in acne, but it's not the only thing, which is why I take a holistic (whole body) approach to treating acne, or any other health condition.

This client is now no longer depressed or suicidal, has a much better diet and lifestyle, and has resumed her studies and social activities again! This is a huge turnaround in about 4 weeks!

If you know a teenager or adult with acne or other skin condition, please refer them to see me! I've personally been through it too and I know what it's like, which is why I would like to help others and avoid the issues I had with acne too.
