How to reduce the cancer risk from red meat

30/10/2015

Further to my article below after the recent press release from the World Health Organisation that red meat can increase the risk of some cancers, I've come across some other research which shows that there is a LOT more to the story!

I agree that red meat and processed meat can increase your cancer risk from a number of factors, such as the type of meat, its quality, what the animal ate, its exposure to chemicals, how the meat is cooked, and more. So for the WHO to lump all red meat and all processed meat together and saying it's unsafe doesn't help in the confusion they have caused the public.
What isn't mentioned in the recent media articles is that there are a LOT more factors involved in cancer development and progression, or much to the horror of vegetarians and vegans, many plant-based foods may also cause cancer - if plants/vegetables/fruits are exposed to certain toxic chemicals in pesticides and herbicides such as Roundup (or others containing glyphosate) which the WHO announced earlier this year is also "probably" cancer-causing.
As eating meat has many health benefits, you can reduce your cancer risk in many ways, but just one I'm mentioning here is by eating your vegies! Recent research has shown that vegetables have many cancer-preventing and cancer-fighting compounds, and eating vegetables with your meat can nullify the potentially dangerous compounds resulting from cooking meat! This benefit can come from mostly green leafy vegetables and the cruciferous/brassica vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts).
So you can go ahead and have your grass-fed steak, but have a salad and some steamed broccoli to go along with it! And I will go one step further and suggest that all ingredients are organic too!

does red meat cause cancer?

27/10/2015

I guess many people have seen this week that an agency of the World Health Organisation (WHO) sent out a press release yesterday (Oct 26, 2015) stating that a high consumption of red meat and processed meat may increase the risk of some cancers. The media jumped all over this story with varying degrees of truth saying that "red meat causes cancer", which is not what WHO said! Nor did WHO say that red meat is as carcinogenic as smoking and asbestos, which some media suggested!

I've read their press release and their data, rather than the news articles, and WHO say the risk is very small. What the WHO agency did was to review the results of 800 research studies over the past 20 years to come up with this result - they did not actually do any new research themselves!

Then they generalised all red meats together in their decision, whether it was organic or not, grain-fed or grass-fed - possibly as such degree of differentiation was not done in the original studies, hence the results are of limited value! They also didn't take into account any other dietary or lifestyle factors into account in these studies, which can have a huge impact on both causing or preventing cancer, depending on long-term decisions made in peoples' lives.

From my own reading of research studies, there is a huge difference in various types of meat and their health benefits or health effects - grass-fed and organic is best! The WHO Q&A on their press release says that "Eating meat has known health benefits". It also said that cooking or processing certain meats can create carcinogenic chemicals, but despite this, it is not understood how cancer risk is increased by eating these products.

The highest risk from eating red meats comes from high-temperature cooking such as on a BBQ in direct contact with a flame, or burnt or well-done meat.
From this "new" information, my expert nutritionist advice hasn't changed! Stick with organic grass-fed meats (not grain-fed)  and cook lightly in a pan with butter or coconut oil. Grass-fed or free-range eggs and wild-caught fish are healthy too!

Char-grilled or BBQ meats or smoked meats are a higher risk, as are highly processed meats such as frankfurters, hot dogs, and tinned meats so avoid all of these. If you can get nitrite/nitrate-free bacon and ham, that would be better for you too!

Stick to eating good quality meats, in moderate amounts, and together with good quality vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds!

be aware of what you eat and chemicals used on your food

Being a Holistic Nutritionist isn't just about helping people with what to eat, but is also about education on what to eat, when, & how, and in even more detail than that.

One extra little detail is what your food was exposed to in terms of chemicals, toxins, or manipulation (such as irradiation or genetic modification) which can make all the difference between a food that is healthy and a similar food that is damaging to your health.

One such suggestion I like to make is to avoid being exposed to toxic chemicals, especially in regard to your food. One of the most prominent and dangerous herbicides used on food crops is Roundup (also known as glyphosate, and found in many other brands of herbicides).

Even though Roundup is promoted as safe, it can have severe adverse health effects as found in recent research, including birth defects, spontaneous abortions, infertility, hormone disruptions, neuro-degenerative diseases and cancer (especially Non-Hodgkins lymphoma). It also gets into the environment, animals and the water supply, causing more issues.

Roundup is also sprayed on cereal (ie wheat and corn), soya and canola crops to kill the plants to make it easier to harvest them. Unfortunately this leads to the chemical being present in your foods - breakfast cereals, breads, bakery products and canola oil. This is one reason why I do not recommend people to eat wheat, corn, soy, or any processed foods with canola oil - unless it has been tested and approved as "organic".

Also avoid Roundup in your gardens, as it can be absorbed through your skin to have the same effect. Have a look online for safe, natural herbicides that you can cheaply and easily make at home, or just pull your weeds out by hand!

Sun Exposure doesn't cause skin cancer...

17/10/2015

Now that it's getting sunnier and warmer here in Brisbane, it's time to think about being sun-safe again - but perhaps not in the way you expect, as you will find out when you read on...

Did you know that your bodies make vitamin D from direct sunlight on exposed skin? Vitamin D is needed in our bodies to boost the immune system, enable calcium from foods to be absorbed and used for strong bones, to help with sleep,  reduces inflammation and stress, reduces depression and other mental health issues, reduces the risk of most cancers, assists with weight loss and many more benefits!

Despite the fact that we have a high number of sunny days in Australia, that most Australians are deficient in vitamin D even in summer! This is due to the "sun safe" programs, supposedly to protect people from skin cancer. Unfortunately the real science shows that sunlight does NOT cause skin cancer - sunlight and vitamin D protects against cancer!

One study published in the International Journal of Cancer in 2000 (entitled: "Sunscreen use and malignant melanoma"), it showed that people who used sunscreens did NOT have a reduced risk of malignant melanoma, that they spent more time in the sun and got melanoma even if they didn't get sunburnt, and there was an increased risk of melanoma from sunscreen use.

Sunscreens generally block the UV-B light (which is what we need to make vitamin D), and they allow the UV-A light to penetrate our skin, but this is the one that actually causes skin damage and skin cancers! Sunscreens give people a false sense of security to allow them to stay out in the sun longer and be exposed to more UV-A light, which increases their risk of skin cancer. This is the real issue. Then there's the toxic and cancer-causing chemicals actually found in recommended sunscreens!

An expert Dermatologist, Dr Bernard Ackerman, who has published 625 research papers on skin cancer says that there is no proven link between sun exposure and melanoma. And people with melanoma have it on less exposed body areas.

In the Cancer Epidemiology Markers and Prevention Journal in 2011, 49000 women were studied over 15 years, and the research showed that there was no evidence of cumulative UV exposure increasing the risk of skin cancer. In the same journal in 2011, 38000 women were studied over 15 years, concluding that sun exposure reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and dying from any cause.

Please check your sunscreens, and do your research on the ingredients in them - even the ones promoted by the Cancer Council have very toxic ingredients including neurotoxins, or they affect fertility or cause DNA damage (ie cancer), or disrupt your normal hormones.

For your family's health, get some sunlight on your skin in small doses (but not enough to burn) and use a natural sunscreen that does not have toxic ingredients in it, from a health food shop.

new Australian food star ratings - a joke!

11/10/2015

The new health star rating system for Australian food products is a joke, or it would be funny if it weren't so serious!

The health stars are supposed to show you which foods are healthier - the more stars, with 5 being the maximum, the better... allegedly! The star rating is mainly based on the amounts of sugar, saturated fats, salt and fibre in foods.

The health star system was funded by the government, in partnership with the food industry (which would be a conflict of interest, like sugar manufacturers telling you that sugar is good because it's natural)... The doctor's association (AMA) was also involved, even though they have no training in nutrition or the effects of food on the body! And retailer associations were also involved in the system - why? what do they know about what's healthy or not?!

I agree that foods high in sugar are given  low rating, because sugar causes weight gain, diabetes, dental issues, and inflammation, which is the cause of most chronic health conditions including cancer. This is why a lot of popular breakfast cereals only got 1-2 out of 5 star ratings, because of their high sugar and salt content, such as Nutri-grain, frosties, fruit loops, and crunchy nut corn flakes and many more.

However, the most interesting ratings occur in foods with fats, with all-natural and healthy butter only receiving a 1/2-1-star rating, and highly processed, chemical-laden, inflammation-causing, trans-fat filled margarine getting a whopping 5-star rating! How is this possible? Apart from the industry bias already mentioned, it's because they are still using pre-1960s dodgy research that said saturated fat causes heart disease when what was actually found as the cause was trans-fat! Hence anyone who says that saturated fats should be avoided hasn't read the much more recent research (as I have) which says the opposite - that saturated fats reduce inflammation, reduce body fat, and protect the heart, amongst many other benefits! However the saturated fat found in meats depends on what the animal actually ate - grain-fed animals will have a high content of inflammatory omega-6 fats (which cause weight gain and heart disease), while grass-fed animals will be high in omega-3 fats, the same healthy fats found in fish!

My qualified recommendation is to ignore the new food star ratings, and certainly don't base your choice of options from this ridiculous system, as it doesn't accurately identify healthy foods from junk foods. Remember that the best and healthiest foods you eat do not actually have labels or star ratings - vegetables, fruits, grass-fed meats and healthy fats/oils such as olive oil (not for cooking), coconut oil and butter!
