Today is apparently World Diabetes Day (November 14, 2020), to raise awareness of the condition of diabetes, and to get more funding for the diabetes associations for research into this condition.

Why? When we already know what causes the main form of diabetes (being Type 2), and how to reverse it! (Type 1 symptoms and effects can be greatly reduced and insulin requirements reduced).

Type 2 Diabetes is a metabolic condition where blood sugar levels are constantly high due to dysfunctional hormones such as insulin, leptin, and ghrelin and others. The body no longer responds correctly to these hormones. High blood glucose is very inflammatory and damaging to the body, especially to the blood vessels (causing atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, skin ulcers and loss of blood supply to lower extremities, poor wound healing), damaging the nerves (causing loss of sensitivity and feeling in extremities), eye conditions, kidney damage, liver damage and more.

The Diabetes associations worldwide and most dietitians are in denial about what causes diabetes! They blame dietary fat for making people fat, which can lead to diabetes, so they claim. So they tell diabetics to eat more carbohydrates - mainly grains and grain products (breads, cereals, muesli bars, pasta), rice, oats, fruit juice etc.

But it's these CARBS which cause high blood sugars! It's the constant intake of high carbohydrate foods which maintains, prolongs and worsens the symptoms of diabetes, NOT dietary fats! Healthy fats in your diet do NOT raise your blood sugars, nor cause in insulin response. Hence fats do not cause insulin resistance, nor cause diabetes!

But diabetics are told to eat more of the very thing which causes high blood sugar - carbs! Why? Because the diabetes associations around the world are sponsored by food industry companies, such as grain companies, cereal producers, and other packaged and processed foods, to maintain their profits. The same food industry companies also sponsor the dietitians' associations around the world, so those associations will promote their products. In some countries, such as in Australia, the Dietitians Association of Australia actually wrote the government food guidelines, again favouring food industry companies' products. This is why these mostly high carb foods are promoted for everyone, and especially for diabetics. Such advice will make your health worse. See some of the attached pics fpr examples of high carb foods being promoted for diabetics.

I have reversed type 2 diabetes in people who have had the condition for years, often in a few weeks! In some, their fasting blood sugar readings dropped into the normal range within a few days! All because of getting the right scientifically proven nutrition advice and some lifestyle changes, in an easy to follow treatment plan.

If you have diabetes or someone you know does and hasn't been able to improve their symptoms in a few weeks, then I would love to help! Type 2 Diabetes is completely reversible! But it needs to be treated by someone who understands the condition and who focuses on the root causes, and not by someone who wants to just "manage" the symptoms. Make a decision to reverse type 2 diabetes today, and improve your quality of life!

What is a low carb diet? How can a low carb diet reverse chronic health conditions?

There is a growing trend and following of "low carb" type diets for improving health! But there seems to be some confusion or misunderstandings about what "low carb" is, how it is to be implemented, and the benefits! So what does "low carb" actually mean?! Does it benefit everyone? And for which health conditions can it help? Most excellent questions, I'm glad you asked!

The macronutrients we need to eat in a balanced diet (whatever that means!) are proteins, fats and carbohydrates. While most foods contain all of these macronutrients, the definition of carbohydrates is less clear, but generally includes all vegetables, fruit, grains, legumes, pulses, starches and sugars.

At first glance most of these foods would seem to be health, so why do we want to do "low carb"?!

In my clinical practice I analyse peoples' diets and I see most people eating far too many "processed carbohydrates", which includes sugary foods and drinks, breads, grains, bakery foods, cereals, pasta, and alcohol. These products are all high in carbohydrates, but very low in real nutrients! Carbohydrates are NOT an "essential" nutrient, as our bodies can make them from other foods we eat. We have "essential" proteins (amino acids), and "essential" fats (the omega-3 and omega-6 fats) which we MUST have in our diets regularly, because our bodies cannot make them! But there are no essential carbohydrates!

Diets high in these processed carbohydrates can not only reduce the overall amount of nutrients you eat, but cause high blood sugar levels and a lot of inflammation in your body. It is the high blood sugar which causes most of the inflammation response, but also other "nutrients" and "anti-nutrients" in these high carb foods, such as gluten, lectins, phytates, preservatives, additives, agricultural chemicals, moulds and toxins, and more.

High levels of inflammation (which can be confirmed with pathology testing) are what causes most chronic health conditions we see today - weight gain and obesity, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and even cancer.

I also see people not getting enough protein in their diet, and not enough healthy fats! We need proteins for growth and repair, and for many other metabolic functions every day. We also need healthy fats to make our hormones, neurotransmitters, new cells, for energy, and much more! Processed carbohydrates seems to be in excess in most people, and this causes health issues... so a lower processed carb intake, with the reduced amount of processed carbs being replaced by quality protein and healthy fats, can reduce symptoms and bring around a return to health!

There are many implementations of low carb diets, such as Paleo, keto/ketosis/ketogenic, low inflammation diet, primal, LCHF (usually meaning Low Carb High Fat, but that causes bad implementations, so I prefer Low processed-Carb Healthy Fat instead!), and others.

Not all of these nutrition plans may be beneficial for everyone, as there are a lot of interpretations of them, and some can be too extreme for my liking. The main problems are often seen in LCHF, Paleo, or ketogenic diets, which some people can have too much of a percentage of one macronutrient, at the expense of others, which can cause deficiencies and negate any benefits to your health. When these plans are done well, the benefits to your health can be incredible!

With the "good" carbohydrates of whole, fresh, and organic vegetables and fruits being packed with nutrients, I still recommend you eat plenty of these types of carbs! So a "low carb" diet really means a "low processed-carb, low inflammation, but high in nutrients" food plan!

A low carb nutrition plan can have many benefits to your health, by increasing your nutrient intake, reducing inflammation, reducing symptoms of chronic diseases, and helping you to feel much better!

DIABETES: WHY DOES THE USUAL TREATMENT MAKE IT WORSE?

Is salt good or bad for your health?

28/5/2017

For decades we have been told that salt is bad for us, will give us heart disease and will kill us. We are told it is as bad as smoking, not exercising, or eating saturated fat or cholesterol. The latter has been thoroughly disproven as a cause of heart disease, so is salt just another example of poor science which is actually us more harm? Read on!

"Salt" comes in many types, but the main health complaints are about "sodium chloride" or "table salt". The alleged issue with salt is that is causes high blood pressure which puts undue strain on your heart and blood vessels, leading to kidney damage, heart disease and heart attacks.

Sodium levels in your body can be affected by many factors including intake of potassium and calcium (deficiencies of these can cause higher sodium levels), water intake, amount of exercise undertaken,  alcohol intake, and other factors.

Blood pressure on the other hand can be affected by many factors also, including stress, nutrient intake (and deficiencies), weight gain, genetics, age, metabolic hormones, blood sugar levels, and other causes.

Hence salt intake is only one of many possible causes of high sodium levels and blood pressure!

However, in many published studies high blood pressure isn't caused by salt, but salt may exacerbate pre-existing high blood pressure symptoms or heart issues, or in those with diabetes or kidney conditions. Over 80% of people with normal blood pressure do not show any signs of high blood pressure from increasing their salt intake. Even those with high blood pressure, 75% are not sensitive to salt! In fact, having very low sodium levels is likely to kill you much quicker than having  higher sodium levels or even high blood pressure.

Other issues with "table salt" include that is also contain various fillers including MSG (a known neurotoxin), anti-caking chemicals, aluminium (another neurotoxin), and in "iodised salt", iodine, which is needed in the diet but can lead to excessive iodine causing thyroid problems. Table salt is added to many processed and packaged foods such as breads, cakes, biscuits, crackers, sauces, and many more foods as it can act as a preservative so the food can last longer.

The fact is that we NEED salt in our diets as our bodies use the components of salt - sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and over 60 or more other trace minerals. We need salt for all of our body functions, including for our brain and nervous system, bone health, pH balance, energy production, digestion and even needed for good heart and muscle activity! Table salt does not contain these additional minerals which are essential for good health, or which can negate the issues of just having just sodium and chloride.

Too little salt (or having deficiencies of the minerals in salt) can lead to insulin resistance, increased fat storage, diabetes, low energy, reduced libido, infertility, poor bone health, poor nervous system function and reduced muscle function including weakness and cramps.

Another major cause of heart disease (other than the disproven saturated fat and cholesterol myths) is actually a high intake of sugar and foods which break down into sugar. This causes inflammation of the blood vessels, insulin resistance, weight gain, diabetes, kidney damage, and high blood pressure and cholesterol levels - most of the symptoms being blamed on salt!

Which types of salt are good for you? Most unrefined sea salt is good, but I'd recommend either Celtic sea salt or Himalayan pink salt, because they contain so many other beneficial trace minerals!
Adding these good salts to food is a healthier option, however you shouldn't need to add salt to every meal. If you crave salty foods, there are other causes to this than just lacking salt - you may be deficient in some nutrients which the salt is providing in small amounts. If you are frequently craving salt, then you should see your friendly Naturopath (me!) to investigate which minerals you may be deficient in, and how to correct this with your diet or supplementation.

So don't worry about salt, providing you are having enough of the good stuff! However if you do have high blood pressure, I can help to identify the causes and improve your overall health!

The Health benefits of chocolate!

28/5/2017

Here's an appropriate article on the benefits of chocolate, just in time for Easter!

Chocolate has been demonised for its fat content or being associated with acne, dental decay, weight gain and diabetes. There are many contradictory news articles which make it hard to agree on the benefits (or otherwise) of chocolate. Here's some of the facts, based on scientific research:

1) Cacao, the raw ingredient in chocolate, is very high in antioxidants, to reduce aging and oxidative stress - in much higher amounts in dark chocolate!
2) Cacao is an aphrodisiac!
3) Cacao is high in healthy fats, which has a positive effect on blood cholesterol levels
4) Cacao is high in nitrogen compounds (including caffeine) which stimulate the nervous system but relaxes muscles and reduces blood pressure
5) Cacao contains many minerals such as potassium, copper, iron, zinc and magnesium.

However... (!), there are issues with commercial chocolate and it may not be for everyone:

1) chocolate is highly processed, high in added sugar, and other dubious ingredients like wheat, soy, palm oil, and others
2) chocolate can cause heartburn (indigestion or GORD/GERD or reflux)
3) some people can be allergic or intolerant to some ingredients in chocolate, which can cause inflammation to exacerbate existing health conditions
4) the high sugar content of chocolate can lead to weight gain, obesity, diabetes, and dental decay
5) many of the beneficial nutrients in the raw cacao are lost in the processing of chocolate.

Based on the above I recommend a low intake of commercially processed chocolate, but a moderate intake of raw cacao can be added to meals to give all the benefits of chocolate without the issues. Add cacao powder to smoothies, porridge, protein balls for snacks, or other healthy recipes!

Have a happy Easter!

sugar is linked to heart disease, not saturated fat

30/3/2017

If you have read some of my articles, you will know that there is a lot of misinformation on many topics of health and nutrition, and I try to correct those stories with real scientific facts. Some of the misinformation is just from urban myths, hearsay or unsubstantiated stories. Other health or medical stories are manufactured from poor scientific studies funded by the industry or the company who intends to profit from a positive result. This happens all the time, sadly.

Once such biased and corrupted story which has amazingly gone on for almost 50 years was conducted by the American sugar industry in the 1960s. At the time, research was starting to emerge that showed heart disease was being linked to a higher intake of sugar at that time. The sugar industry was understandably concerned about this, and decided to respond by funding scientists to write studies which falsely linked saturated fat to heart disease, while exonerating their own product - sugar.

The sugar industry then lobbied government policy-makers to introduce low-fat health measures, which are, for the most part in government and medical areas, still being promoted today. New published research in late-2016, uncovered old papers and letters showing that the sugar industry did manipulate research and government food guidelines in the 1960s and ever since.

The practice of industries funding research into their own products (as opposed to independent studies which are less prone to bias) still happens today. For example, Coca Cola in 2015 were shown to be sponsoring studies which showed sugary soft drinks were not linked to obesity! There are many more like this. Luckily some journalists or independent scientists are suspicious of such research results and investigate them deeper, and the public are becoming more wary of such blatant bias, and they are not falling for it.

The conflicts of interest in modern science needs to stop. The editor-in-chief- of the most prestigious medical journal "The Lancet" in 2015 said that a lot of the scientific literature published (and peer-reviewed) was simply false. His counterpart in another of the oldest medical journals, The New England Journal of Medicine, similarly said that it was impossible to believe much published research, or to rely on the judgment of doctors or medical guidelines. This is a sad indictment of science today - it's all about profits for the company funding their own research, or getting funds to do research or perhaps for the ego of the scientists writing the papers, but very little to do with improving your health. A lot of this "scientific" fiction is actually harming people and their health.

Most, if not all, of the independent scientific research (which is less prone to poor study designs and biased results) shows that saturated fats are NOT a major factor at all in the development and progression of heart disease! It IS sugary foods and drinks which are linked to heart disease instead, and other refined carbohydrates (grain products, alcohol etc) which causes heart disease - by causing chronic inflammation, damaging blood vessels, raising blood sugars and causing insulin resistance (ie, diabetes), increasing blood pressure and bad cholesterol levels.

Be careful what and whom you believe when it comes to health and medical advice! When different scientific results come out, have an open mind and do your own research, or just ask a practitioner (Doctor, GP, Naturopath etc) for evidence, then check it out for yourself. Be prepared to change your opinion, depending on what you find!

is fruit as bad as sugar for your health?

22/9/2016

We hear frequently that processed sugar is bad for us, causing everything from acne to weight gain! The truth is that sugar is a lot worse than that! It can also cause diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, cancer and many other chronic health conditions.

Does this also apply to the sugar found in fruit? Lets find out!

The fruit sugar is called fructose, which is different to the glucose found in vegetables. These different types of sugars are absorbed and used differently i...n the body. The good news is that the fibre in fresh and whole fruit slows down the absorption of fructose! So it would be hard to overdose on fresh whole fruit! Although this may not be ideal to do if you have diabetes, cancer or heart disease.

Fresh, whole fruit provides an abundance of vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants, and many phytonutrients to improve your health. The best fruits are those that are organic, in season, and locally grown - for the highest nutrient content.

In small amounts, up to 60% of fructose is converted to glucose to be used for energy by the body's cells, and any excess is stored as fat. However in concentrated forms of fructose like dried fruit, soft drinks, fruit juices, and corn syrup, honey, maple and agave syrups, fructose is converted by the liver directly into fat.

High intakes of concentrated fructose has been shown in research to increase blood sugar and cholesterol more than other types of sugars, causing weight gain, fatty liver, and inflammation of the blood vessels, leading to diabetes and heart disease and many other health conditions.

For your future health and prevention of health conditions, stick to fresh whole fruit regularly in your diet, but avoid the concentrated forms of fructose as these will make your health worse.

cancer charities causing more cancer than they prevent

5/5/2016

As you may know from my posts on this page, educating people about and treating people with safer treatments for cancer is one of my main interests. There are a couple of things that really annoy me about the modern treatment options, 2 of them are chemotherapy and radiation therapy; neither of which have very good successes against most cancers, as they both destroy the immune system (which protects you against cancer) and they actually cause more cancers...

The other thing that annoys me is the so-called fundraising by cancer charities who beg for your hard-earned dollars for "research", when most of it goes into their administration costs and expenses to keep themselves going. They also make appalling decisions regarding their fundraising - and I have seen 2 such examples in the past day.

1) The Cancer Council - are advertising for fundraising for "Australia's Biggest Morning Tea" later this month, to get people and businesses/corporates to host a morning tea with plenty of "delicious food" in return for a donation.
2)  The Breast Cancer Network Australia - are advertising for the "Pink Bun Campaign" with a national bakery chain to make a special pink bun with sweet bread, icing and pink sprinkles, where all proceeds go to the BCNA.

The problem with these campaigns is that they are using unhealthy foods that actually CAUSE and PROMOTE cancer growth and development! Irony at its finest. Sugar, and other carbohydrate-rich foods that break down into sugar in the body (ie bakery and grain products such as flour) and the chemical preservatives etc in these sweet foods have been shown in much research to cause cancers.

"Charities" like these do not have a clue about what they are actually doing to your health, or the consequences of their actions. If these charities are really about research and prevention, why don't they know that sugary foods and drinks will cause cancer?! Why should they get your dollars if they are wasting it on their costs, including their massive TV advertising budget on these events, and not on real prevention or research? Why aren't they instead recommending a "healthy" option and education program instead?

As I have done in the past and will continue to, I would be suggesting that you boycott these events, and tell these charities to look at what they are actually doing.

There's plenty of research evidence that the effectiveness of some natural treatment options far exceed those of chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer, including nutritional improvements and supplements, herbal medicines, reducing stresses and emotional traumas, reducing exposure to toxic chemicals in foods and the environment, and many more. This is how I can help people with cancer.
I know that the general public and supporters of these charities are well-meaning and want to help, but these unhealthy fundraisers are not the way to do it. My article is not against anyone touched by cancer, or supporters of these charities, but the charities themselves who have no clue of the consequences of their activities.

How times have changed on fat and cholesterol research

18/1/2016

I have written previously about how low fat diets actually cause more negative health issues  than they are supposed to prevent (see other articles below) and even more recent scientific research backs this up.

Unfortunately the old paradigm of low fat and low cholesterol foods are healthy and reduce the risk of heart disease was based on shonky observational studies (by reviewing peoples' diet diaries) done in the 1950s to come up with their conclusions, and not by any clinical studies done in the laboratory to prove that dietary fat actually causes the issues in peoples' bodies. Hence we have had 50 or more years of misinformation and conflicting advice by those who want to stick to the old low fat paradigm (Doctors, Dietitians and many personal trainers), and those (like me) who look at more current clinical research studies which shows that low fat and low cholesterol diets are not recommended because of the health risks they cause.

So what does actually cause heart disease, high cholesterol and atherosclerosis (thickening and hardening of arterial walls that lead to blockages, clots and strokes)?

According to recent research, it's trans-fat (from processed and fried foods and margarine), SUGAR and WHOLE GRAINS which are the main culprits in heart disease and arterial damage, and not healthy fats, especially not saturated fats, which appeared to have a protective effect on the heart! Saturated fats (such as in butter and coconut oil) increase your "good" HDL cholesterol, but trans-fat, sugars and grains do the reverse - they increase your bad "LDL" cholesterol and lower your "good" HDL cholesterol.

In addition, fructose (the sugar found in fruit) has also been implicated in obesity and heart disease - in the concentrated and processed forms of fructose such as sugary foods, soft drinks, and fruit juices. However fresh whole fruit is fine as it doesn't have the same effect.

A diet high in sugars and grains leads to obesity, which causes insulin resistance and diabetes, which in turn causes high blood pressure, and in turn this causes heart disease, kidney problems, eye diseases and lowered eyesight, poor circulation and further heart damage in a vicious cycle - and leading to death.

There are many other negative issues with sugars and grains too, such as causing cancer, gastrointestinal issues, depression and mood swings, liver issues and causing or exacerbating many other health conditions.

So if you are wanting to improve your health, please come and see me for a personalised nutrition plan and treatment plan to reverse any health conditions you may have, and to improve your health and make you feel a lot better!

new Australian food star ratings - a joke!

11/10/2015

The new health star rating system for Australian food products is a joke, or it would be funny if it weren't so serious!

The health stars are supposed to show you which foods are healthier - the more stars, with 5 being the maximum, the better... allegedly! The star rating is mainly based on the amounts of sugar, saturated fats, salt and fibre in foods.

The health star system was funded by the government, in partnership with the food industry (which would be a conflict of interest, like sugar manufacturers telling you that sugar is good because it's natural)... The doctor's association (AMA) was also involved, even though they have no training in nutrition or the effects of food on the body! And retailer associations were also involved in the system - why? what do they know about what's healthy or not?!

I agree that foods high in sugar are given  low rating, because sugar causes weight gain, diabetes, dental issues, and inflammation, which is the cause of most chronic health conditions including cancer. This is why a lot of popular breakfast cereals only got 1-2 out of 5 star ratings, because of their high sugar and salt content, such as Nutri-grain, frosties, fruit loops, and crunchy nut corn flakes and many more.

However, the most interesting ratings occur in foods with fats, with all-natural and healthy butter only receiving a 1/2-1-star rating, and highly processed, chemical-laden, inflammation-causing, trans-fat filled margarine getting a whopping 5-star rating! How is this possible? Apart from the industry bias already mentioned, it's because they are still using pre-1960s dodgy research that said saturated fat causes heart disease when what was actually found as the cause was trans-fat! Hence anyone who says that saturated fats should be avoided hasn't read the much more recent research (as I have) which says the opposite - that saturated fats reduce inflammation, reduce body fat, and protect the heart, amongst many other benefits! However the saturated fat found in meats depends on what the animal actually ate - grain-fed animals will have a high content of inflammatory omega-6 fats (which cause weight gain and heart disease), while grass-fed animals will be high in omega-3 fats, the same healthy fats found in fish!

My qualified recommendation is to ignore the new food star ratings, and certainly don't base your choice of options from this ridiculous system, as it doesn't accurately identify healthy foods from junk foods. Remember that the best and healthiest foods you eat do not actually have labels or star ratings - vegetables, fruits, grass-fed meats and healthy fats/oils such as olive oil (not for cooking), coconut oil and butter!
