New dangers of sunscreens containing toxic and harmful ingredients, including some causing cancer and hormone effects

For over 7 years I have been warning people on the health dangers and toxicity of sunscreens. I have investigated and written on the ingredients in sunscreens and how they actually INCREASE the risks of skin cancers and melanoma (the most dangerous type) and other health issues.

Sunscreens cause more skin cancers (and other cancers) because of their toxic ingredients which are known to cause cancer, but also due to HOW they work - sunscreens block UV-B light to prevent the skin redness and burning, and prevents production of vitamin D which protects against cancer (!), but this gives you a false sense of security to stay outside in the sun longer to be exposed to more UV-A light, which is the one that causes skin damage and skin cancers...

I personally approached sunscreen manufacturers such as the "Cancer Council" about the ingredients they use in their sunscreens, and the many toxic chemicals, hormone disrupting chemicals (affecting male/female hormones or thyroid function), and known cancer-causing chemicals they use. They denied there was any problem, despite many published studies on the chemicals they use causing these health effects.

So every Spring and Summer I call them out on this, so that people are aware and don't use their dangerous sunscreens. There are much better and safer options available.

Karma might have caught up with the "Cancer Council" in May 2022, when their sunscreens had elevated levels of a cancer-causing chemical (Benzene) in them, and they were forced to make this information public and recall some of their products (TGA, 2022). But they have had these dangerous chemicals in their sunscreens for many years and they did nothing. For example, their "everyday" sunscreens had several known cancer-causing chemicals, AND several hormone-disrupting chemicals, and other toxic chemicals, and some chemicals banned in other countries, in ONE product.

Perhaps as a result of this finding, and perhaps my warnings (I'd like to think so!) the Cancer Council changed the ingredients in some of their products recently in 2022. So I checked out their products and ingredients again, and here it is...

The Cancer Council have so many more products now, mostly with the same toxic ingredients in each product, but some variations too. Their "everyday" sunscreen has one less chemical now, which wasn't one that was known to cause cancer, but did cause neurotoxicity and disruptions to hormones. The "everyday" product still contains 2 cancer-causing chemicals, 2 hormone-disrupting chemicals, and one being damaging the environment or wildlife.

I investigated some of their other sunscreens too, including their "ultra" and "kids" products. The "ultra" product has many more chemicals than the "everyday" product, and more toxic too, with 3 cancer-causing chemicals, 3 hormone-disrupting chemicals, and 3 which are toxic to the environment and wildlife.

The Cancer Council's "kids" product has the same number of chemicals as the "ultra" product, with most being the same, and containing 2 cancer-causing chemicals, 2 hormone-disrupting chemicals, but 3 which are toxic to the environment or wildlife. If you had children, would you really put this on them now?

The Cancer Council is well named isn't it... adding cancer-causing chemicals to their products which are supposed to prevent cancer, but actually causing it instead.

This article shows the importance of always checking the ingredients and chemicals not just in your foods, but what you put on your skin. What you put on your skin is typically absorbed into your body.

Luckily there are better and safer ways to prevent skin cancers, without the avoidance of healthy sun exposure that you need for vitamin D and other health benefits, and without being exposed to toxic and harmful chemicals.

Stay healthy!

sunglasses can cause sleep problems, depression, and more!

Sunglasses have become very popular over the past few decades, more as a fashion statement than anything beneficial for you!

Like many things which initially appear logical, like the sun allegedly causing skin cancer, or eating fat makes you fat,  when you really dive into the physiology of the body and how it works, and read scientific studies on the topic, you find that what may be the popular belief in the media or government health advice, is completely wrong!

We are told in the media and so-called health organisations like the Cancer Council, who are advising everyone to protect their eyes from the sun with sunglasses as the sun is so dangerous! The Cancer Council have added "slide on sunglasses" to their "slip slop slap" sun safe programs, and their lack of knowledge on the effects of this new advice is appalling.

I had previously researched sunglasses and their effects on health years ago, before I attended a Cancer Council seminar on cancer prevention in 2017. When they introduced their new advice about everyone wearing sunglasses, I publicly asked them were they aware of the health effects of sunglasses, and I was told that there were none! Ok, so I informed them that:

1) Sunglasses cause sleep problems, as your eyes must be exposed to bright sunlight during the day in order to make melatonin, the sleep hormone! So blocking that bright sunlight with sunglasses when outside will reduce melatonin production and secretion, to cause difficulties with getting to sleep or staying asleep. When you don't sleep well, your immune system suffers, which in turn also increases your risks of all cancers. They hadn't heard of this!

2) Sunglasses cause depression. Your eyes have special receptor cells which sends signals to your brain to make serotonin, one of your happy feel-good hormones! A deficiency in serotonin is typical in those with depression. This is the reason why low sunlight exposure during winter in locations further away from the equator causes "seasonal affective disorder" or the "winter blues" or depression. They didn't know this either!

3) Sunglasses cause you to sunburn quicker and more severely, and INCREASES your risks of skin cancer. Your eyes sense the increasing level of sunlight when you are outside and sends hormones to the melanocytes in your skin to produce more melanin, which is your tanning pigment that protects you against sunburn! Wearing sunglasses stops this protective function of the body, so you sunburn more quickly... And they didn't know this either!

And this is all in published research, which I actually provided to the Cancer Council at that seminar in 2017. Nothing seems to have changed in their appalling advice, so I'm making this information public again.

I'm not suggesting that you should never wear sunglasses again, but increasing your "sunglass-free" time when you are outside can help your sleep and moods very quickly! Initially your eyes can be sensitive to sunlight if you have worn sunglasses all the time, but a gradual reduction of wearing sunglasses will reduce your sensitivity.

I have helped so many clients to improve their sleep or their moods or health with very small changes like this! There are many other factors which can cause sleep issues or depression, and each person's causes can be different. It is so important to find and treat the root causes of health issues for a long-term fix!

Are cancer-causing chemicals in your sunscreens?

I frequently write articles about improving your health by improving what you put into your bodies in the form of food! But what you put on your body, in particular on your skin is equally as important, as your skin absorbs liquids, chemicals, and other substances too.

Now that it's warmer and sunnier again here (in Brisbane, Australia), we need to be a bit more careful about looking after our skin health, and the careful balance between getting enough sun exposure on our skin to have good vitamin D levels (for its anti-inflammatory and other health benefits) and getting sun damage from severe sunburns.

I don't believe in avoiding the sun completely, as the sun offers so many health benefits. I don't believe that we should also be wearing sunscreens at all times either, as proposed by certain cancer organisations. It's about having a healthy balance!

Last year I did an expose of the Cancer Council's sunscreen, and their other policies which are not safe for your health. I reviewed their own sunscreen and found 4 hormone-disrupting chemicals, and 5 cancer-causing chemicals, and many other toxic ingredients in their own branded sunscreens, some of which are banned in other countries. The hormone disrupting chemicals either affect your thyroid or your male/female hormones to cause an imbalance to affect your health, such as weight gain, cycle symptoms, infertility, and other effects. See the info in the meme picture for the details.

I was shocked by this information I found, and I raised this with the Cancer Council last year in a seminar they were hosting on cancer prevention. They denied that their sunscreen was unsafe and that it was tested as safe by the TGA. I know that isn't true, as the TGA don't actually test for safety of the ingredients, but only the SPF rating! The independent scientific sources I used showed that the ingredients in their (and other sunscreens) have a lot of adverse health effects.

Just as with the foods and drinks your consume, you should always check the ingredients to find out what they are and what possible effects they have on your health. Sunscreens and cosmetics, moisturisers, shampoos, and other cleaning products etc, are no different. Always check the ingredients!

There are always better natural products for your skin, especially with sunscreens. For the health of your skin and that of your children and family, please avoid toxic chemicals in sunscreens and use safer options this summer.

do you know what is in your sunscreen?

Apologies about the longer than usual article this time! But it's important.

Because I have been running a series of “Cancer Prevention” presentations around Brisbane for the past couple of months, as so happens in Facebook, you get adverts targeted to you! I got one from the Cancer Council for their “Cancer prevention for educators” talk in Brisbane, so being very sceptical and curious, I booked in!
I attended their talk recently. The first thing I noticed was a display of various unhealthy drinks at the front, and which they explained later, was to show the amount of sugar in each, as sugar contributes to weight gain they said. They ignored the main issue of sugar, that it directly causes and feeds cancer, or that it causes inflammation, heart disease, diabetes, and many other chronic health issues! None of that was mentioned.
And the ironic thing they missed was regarding the refreshments table at the back of the room – sugar-laden snacks of muffins and cakes… They just don’t get it do they?!
I expected the “same old” information, and yes that’s what I got. They said at the beginning that it would be evidence-based information. I thought otherwise, as you will see when you read some more of this article…
Their “prevention“ advice was pretty light, and a lot was missing. More troubling was that much of their advice was actually going to cause more cancer in many people.
On the topic of sun health, they want everyone to slather on sunscreens every 2 hours, wear sun protective clothing, wear tight-fitting and wrap-around sunglasses when outside ALL the time, and stay out of the sun ALL year around in Qld, because the UV light levels are allegedly too high and dangerous even in Winter!
They obviously didn’t read or know about my last article on the dangers of wearing sunglasses for prolonged periods – research shows that they block up to 98% of sunlight entering your eyes, but you need this to make your sleep hormone (melatonin), your feeling happy hormone (serotonin) which prevents depression and other mental health issues, and your protective skin pigment melanin, which prevents you burning more severely.
I asked the presenter if they were aware of the health implications of wearing sunglasses, which I summarised, and they said they were not!
I asked a question about the issue of getting enough vitamin D, due to the importance of maintaining good levels to improve health and prevent chronic disease. They said everyone should have enough vitamin D from just walking from their house to their car each day… really?! That’s nowhere near enough from the research I’ve read, and I’ve only seen 2 clients with healthy vitamin D levels in the past couple of years.
The topic of eating well came up, and of course they said to follow the government food guidelines, which we all know is a pile of brown smelly stuff, and is the reason why we are seeing so many chronic health conditions these days. They showed an example of a “good” kids lunch box, which was anything but. It also included a small plastic bottle of water. I commented that they should be informing people of the dangers of using plastic bottles, especially for children, and especially in summer – as the hotter the temperature is, the more hormone-disrupting and cancer-causing chemicals will leach from the plastic into the water. A cancer council representative said it was a good point, but they are just focusing on getting kids to just drink more water at the moment. Even if it’s toxic and cancer-causing?
There was a lot more which was not that exciting, and other bits which were shocking, but I will write about those in another article.
Lastly, I spared their embarrassment somewhat when I spoke to the speaker and her boss afterwards, to ask about what testing is done on sunscreens. They said they are tested by the TGA which uses the highest quality testing. Ok, I said, so how do you explain the 4 hormone-disrupting chemicals, 5 cancer-causing chemicals, and many other toxic ingredients in your own brand sunscreens? (See the info in the meme picture)
They looked a little surprised, but said they have faith in the TGA and their scientists who made it. I asked if they can look further into this, because the resources I used to check their ingredients is highly regarded.
I gave them a copy of the meme picture, and 2 pages of recent published research which contradicted their “advice” on sunscreens, skin cancer, sunglasses, and vitamin D.
I hope they look further into this, as they are supposed to provide “evidence-based” information to the public for preventing cancer. But on what I saw and heard in this presentation, they do neither.

Sunlight doesn't cause skin cancer (part 2)

19/1/2016

Here is part 2 of my article on "sunlight does NOT cause skin cancer": (please see below for the part 1 article if you missed it!)

An expert Dermatologist, Dr Bernard Ackerman, who has published 625 research papers on skin cancer says that there is no proven link between sun exposure and melanoma. And people with melanoma have it on less exposed body areas.
Queensland has the highest rates of melanoma per capita than anywhere in the world. Research shows that the greatest rise in melanoma is seen in countries/areas where chemical sunscreens are most heavily promoted and advertised, and not due to changes in the ozone layer.
In the Cancer Epidemiology Markers and Prevention Journal in 2011, 49000 women were studied over 15 years, and the research showed that there was no evidence of cumulative UV exposure increasing the risk of skin cancer. In the same journal in 2011, 38000 women were studied over 15 years, concluding that sun exposure reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and dying from any cause, but there was an increased risk of dying from solarium use.
Let's have a look at a sunscreen recommended and sold in Australia from the Cancer Council - one would think a reputable source for a good product?! Well, it appears not... Some of the chemicals in their sunscreens include (source: http://skinhealth.com.au/blog/product/everyday/):

Phenoxyethanol - a preservative. Unfortunately this is a neurotoxin and shown to affect the nervous system, causes dermatitis, causes reproductive damage and genetic damage (ie, cancer), according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Hydroxybenzoates - a paraben, antioxidant, antimicrobial and preservative. This chemical can cause skin irritation and allergies. Parabens are oestrogen hormone mimicking chemicals that have hormone interfering effects on the body, and have been linked to breast cancer development and growth.

Benzyl alcohol - a preservative. This chemical can irritate the skin and over time can cause allergic dermatitis, and is very dangerous for very young children as it has caused some deaths in premature babies. It can also break down into other chemicals, one of which is formaldehyde, which is a known carcinogenic (cancer-causing) chemical.

Not only do sunscreens cause skin cancer from giving you a false sense of security outside in the sun (they allow you to spend more time being exposed to the cancer-causing UV-A radiation and not getting burnt) but they also contain chemicals which can directly cause cancer too...

If you can't regularly get out into the sun, then vitamin D from food the next best option, particularly fish liver oils such as cod liver oil. Very few other foods actually contain vitamin D3. Some plant foods contain vitamin D2 but this isn't as usable in the body. You can also get vitamin D as a supplement, such as Vitamin D3 (not D2!) which can be taken as a tablet, capsule, liquid or oral spray. See your health practitioner or myself for any questions!

From recent research, it is clear that we need vitamin D from sunlight for many benefits to our health and we should not be scared of going out in the sun. Check the table in the attached picture to see how much sun exposure you should get for optimal vitamin D levels without burning. Also, avoid the toxic and cancer-causing chemicals found in most commercial sunscreens and either use a natural one from your local health food store, or look for a recipe online for a safe and effective sunscreen using coconut oil!

Sun Exposure doesn't cause skin cancer...

17/10/2015

Now that it's getting sunnier and warmer here in Brisbane, it's time to think about being sun-safe again - but perhaps not in the way you expect, as you will find out when you read on...

Did you know that your bodies make vitamin D from direct sunlight on exposed skin? Vitamin D is needed in our bodies to boost the immune system, enable calcium from foods to be absorbed and used for strong bones, to help with sleep,  reduces inflammation and stress, reduces depression and other mental health issues, reduces the risk of most cancers, assists with weight loss and many more benefits!

Despite the fact that we have a high number of sunny days in Australia, that most Australians are deficient in vitamin D even in summer! This is due to the "sun safe" programs, supposedly to protect people from skin cancer. Unfortunately the real science shows that sunlight does NOT cause skin cancer - sunlight and vitamin D protects against cancer!

One study published in the International Journal of Cancer in 2000 (entitled: "Sunscreen use and malignant melanoma"), it showed that people who used sunscreens did NOT have a reduced risk of malignant melanoma, that they spent more time in the sun and got melanoma even if they didn't get sunburnt, and there was an increased risk of melanoma from sunscreen use.

Sunscreens generally block the UV-B light (which is what we need to make vitamin D), and they allow the UV-A light to penetrate our skin, but this is the one that actually causes skin damage and skin cancers! Sunscreens give people a false sense of security to allow them to stay out in the sun longer and be exposed to more UV-A light, which increases their risk of skin cancer. This is the real issue. Then there's the toxic and cancer-causing chemicals actually found in recommended sunscreens!

An expert Dermatologist, Dr Bernard Ackerman, who has published 625 research papers on skin cancer says that there is no proven link between sun exposure and melanoma. And people with melanoma have it on less exposed body areas.

In the Cancer Epidemiology Markers and Prevention Journal in 2011, 49000 women were studied over 15 years, and the research showed that there was no evidence of cumulative UV exposure increasing the risk of skin cancer. In the same journal in 2011, 38000 women were studied over 15 years, concluding that sun exposure reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and dying from any cause.

Please check your sunscreens, and do your research on the ingredients in them - even the ones promoted by the Cancer Council have very toxic ingredients including neurotoxins, or they affect fertility or cause DNA damage (ie cancer), or disrupt your normal hormones.

For your family's health, get some sunlight on your skin in small doses (but not enough to burn) and use a natural sunscreen that does not have toxic ingredients in it, from a health food shop.
