choosing food for alkalinity is pointless & harmful!

There is a lot of misinformation about acidity and alkalinity in our foods and in our bodies, which I would like to neutralise! Sorry, the pun is fully intended! ;-)
If like me, you frequently see health related social media posts saying that you should eat alkaline foods or drink alkalised water (such as baking soda drinks) to improve your health, or even prevent cancer, because (allegedly) cancer cannot survive in an alkaline body... ignore them! These posts are wrong!

If you actually follow or implement those ideas, then please read this and consider the real facts, because you may actually be doing your body and your health more harm than good. Sorry...

The facts are:
- acidity or alkalinity is measured on the pH scale from 0 (highly acidic) to 7 (neutral) to 14 (highly basic or alkaline)
- your body has different pH in different fluids and organs for good reasons
- your body only works well within a small pH range for that particular organ or fluid, for example, blood pH should be within 7.35 and 7.45; a very small range, outside of which YOU DIE
-  your saliva or urine pH (from test strips etc) bears no resemblance of what is going on in the rest of your body
- various areas of the body MUST be acidic, to repel bacteria, virus and yeast infections, such as on your skin and in your stomach and gastrointestinal, urinary and reproductive tracts. These microbes LIKE an alkaline environment and thrive in it!
- your body has 5 pH buffering (ie, balancing) systems to keep various organs of fluids within the small pH range necessary for good health. Providing too much acidic foods or drinks will simply be balanced out with production of more alkaline compounds and increased excretion of the acids!
- there is the public perception that cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, and therefore why we need to eat and drink more alkaline products and avoid acidic foods. The real fact is that cancer cells have a disordered metabolism and only produce energy via a process called glycolysis, from which a major byproduct is lactate, also called lactic ACID! Hence it is the cancer cells producing the acidic environment, NOT the acidic environment causing the cancer...

Then there's my (least) favourite social media health post recommending drinking alkalised water with bicarbonate (baking soda) to prevent disease and cancer! This comes from old research from an Italian cancer doctor Simoncini who produced research that he killed cancer cells with alkaline baking soda. HOWEVER, he INJECTED baking soda into tumours, and found this killed cancer cells. BUT it isn't actually the alkalinity which kills the cancer cells, but by the "osmotic shift" in fluid from within the cancer cells into the higher alkaline fluid injected into the tumour. The cancer cells dehydrated and died as a result.

Unfortunately people have just taken the "baking soda kills cancer cells" headline and run off with the idea that baking soda and alkalinity can be taken in any form as a cheap and simple cancer prevention or treatment! Nothing could be further from the truth.

Drinking baking soda water will hit your stomach and neutralise some of the stomach acid! This will reduce the effectiveness of the acidic stomach to kill bacteria and viruses and other pathogens (leading to more infections), AND reduce the amount of digestion of foods that the stomach can break down, which in turn means a reduced absorption of digested nutrients which your body really needs, and in turn your entire body and health will suffer. Your stomach needs to be highly acidic in order to properly break down carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins B9 (folate), B12, and other nutrients which you can then use. If you don't have enough acidity in your stomach, you won't get these nutrients and your health will suffer.

Alkaline foods can be very healthy, but so can acidic foods (tomatoes, citrus, pineapple, and many others). Just because some foods are acidic doesn't mean they are bad, and similarly, just because some foods are alkaline doesn't mean they are healthy! To be healthy, you need to eat a variety of foods, and not restrict your intake based on an incorrect assumption or misinterpretation of  a story based on a food's pH level!

Having good health and preventing diseases like cancer is more about what NUTRIENTS are in those foods and how well your digestive system is functioning, and avoiding chemicals and toxins that our modern foods are exposed to.

This is why you need to ignore the hype and see a qualified nutritionist or naturopath, like me, for the facts on improving your health, and preventing and treating health conditions!

Thanks for your question Barbara!

I know this to be true because I spend a lot of time researching the truth. There is a lot of misinformation around in the health and nutrition areas, and I look into the published research in all my articles.

If you have read some of my other articles, many are about correcting the misinformation which people have about certain conditions, treatments or popular beliefs.

Everything in this article is true - some of it is basic human anatomy physiology in any textbook on the subject, especially the areas of the body which must be acidic.

Have a look at the topic of the "Warburg effect" which was published way back in 1924 by Otto Warburg, who received a Nobel prize for science for his discovery that cancer cells use the cellular respiration process of glycolysis to produce energy from sugar, and produce lactic acid as a result. It's the lactic acid from cancer cells which creates an acidic environment around cancer cells - but it can't make the whole body acidic, as the body's pH balancing systems will correct that.

Read more on the story of Dr Simoncini and how he killed cancer cells by injecting tumours with baking soda. There's no research showing how ingesting baking soda can kill cancer cells. Also google "the chemical equation of what happens when baking soda is mixed with stomach acid", and you will see how baking soda is transformed into common salt, carbon dioxide and water in the stomach! Baking soda will never get to any cancer cells.

Basic body physiology textbooks again shows that your body has (at least) 5 pH buffering/balancing systems to keep different areas of the body in their correct pH levels for that part of the body to work properly. his happens in the kidneys, blood, lungs, pancreas and digestive tract. These are the main ones, and there may be more.

Even if you only ate alkaline foods, your body wouldn't be alkaline as these pH balancing systems would bring each area back into balance by making more acidic compounds to balance it.

When those memes say "you need an alkaline body for good health and prevent cancer", which part of the body are they referring to?! Again basic body physiology shows that different areas of the body have different pH in order to work properly.

Lastly, but not mentioned above, is that it is impossible to have "acidic blood"! Often we are told that acidic foods cause our blood to be acidic, but our blood pH MUST be within 7.35 to 7.45, which is in the alkaline range. If your blood somehow went below 7.35 you would be very ill, unconscious and dead before your blood actually got into the acidic pH range of below 7!

And you can't measure your blood pH - nor should you need to as if you are alive, you are within that tiny range!

Hence my recommendation that for good health or for prevention of disease, just choose foods for their NUTRIENT content, not their alkalinity. Just eat whole, fresh, organic real foods, and avoid the modern junk processed foods, fast foods, GMOs, and chemical-laden foods - these are what will make you unhealthy.

In my personal experience, I was put on a ph balenced diet by a naturopath, and in all of my studies since, ph balanced diets are just another diet. The body has to work hard, and it does, to rebalance the acid the way it wants to be.

Thanks for your comment! I agree with you - our bodies work hard to automatically balance pH, and different pH levels in different tissues, regardless of whether you eat an acid or alkaline diet. Trying to modify that yourself is next to impossible which is the point of my article.

Many Naturopaths as well as the general public are also of the opinion that alkaline diets are what is needed for general health or for treating certain conditions.

And I said above, focus on just eating quality whole, fresh, organic real foods for their nutrient content, not their pH!

Id argue that our modern day totally acidic diet has brought the poor health most experience. thats why everyones sick. their lymph systems are plugged from inactivity and swelling commences. people crap less and less and constipation leads to more problems such as more toxicitiy. Trust me, baking soda protocols do work and Im proof.

Our modern day diets of processed foods, sugar-laden foods, trans-fat containing junk food, and all the artificial preservatives, additives, sweeteners and other chemicals is not good or healthy for anyone.

This leads to a lack of good nutrients which we really need. The modern western diets are lacking in NUTRIENTS not lacking alkalinity!

And we are lacking in exercise in our lifestyle, and it's exercise which gets the lymph moving around the body and then into the blood so it can be cleaned up and wastes are removed.

So I agree with you that our current diets and lifestyle are not good for our health, and people need to change their way of life, which I'm helping people to do with education, empowerment and supporting them to achieve good health.

I have explained the alkalinity argument and what happens with ingesting baking soda above, so there's no point going over that again.

I don't know your full story so I can't comment about that. I'm pleased that you are healthy. Best wishes!
